The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 9: TUINMANSWONING.

Inleiding

Description component 9: GARDENER'S COTTAGE.

Introduction

The GARDENER'S COTTAGE (9) designed in 1912 by the architect H.T. Mojet was executed by the local architect G.T. Verboog in the tradition of Transitional architecture with Old Dutch elements. The cottage is situated directly southwest of the entrance (see 8) along the Rijksstraatweg. In 1962 an extension was placed against the rear facade which is of subsidiary importance for the protection.

Description

The detached, partly cellared, single-storey building with originally an L-shaped floor plan is constructed of grey brickwork (Flemish bond) with brick courses above the window frame and below and above the windows, whereby this decorative band also serves as a covering for the facade openings. The building is covered with a gabled roof with suppressed Dutch tiles, which at the location of the extension on the rear side transitions into a monitor roof. The front facade facing the driveway (northeast) is a symmetrically arranged long side with the entrance in the middle before a step, consisting of a two-part clamped door with four panes and four-pane fanlight. On either side of it are cross windows with below green/white painted shutters and glazed-bar fanlights. In the middle axis a three-part four-pane roof dormer is placed (originally two-part six-pane). Both gable ends have a comparable arrangement with the same type of cross window on the ground floor in the pointed gable section as in the front facade and on the upper storey a simplified window. The right side gable has in the sloping gable section a simplified window with shutter. The left gable end of the extension has a second entrance comparable to that in the front facade. This is hidden from view by a timber extension from 1962. The rear facade of the extension (kitchen) has a double, glazed-bar window with shutters with to the right of it a small toilet window.

Internally the original layout has been largely maintained with a hall in the middle with behind it stairs to the loft and one to the cellar. To the left of it is the sitting room with a simple fireplace and to the right the living room with a simple fireplace.

Valuation

The GARDENER'S COTTAGE is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as a characteristic example of a gardener's cottage from the early 20th century, built in the tradition of Transitional architecture with Old Dutch elements.

The building is reasonably intact as regards main form, material use and detailing.

The gardener's cottage has ensemble value because of the spatial and functional relationship with the other complex components of the historic country estate Zuydwijk and is visually prominent, situated directly southwest of the entrance to the estate.
