Inleiding
MEELPAKHUIS, onderdeel uitmakend van het complex meelfabriek 'De Sleutels', gebouwd in 1937. Het meelpakhuis is uitgevoerd in een functionalistische bouwtrant, naar ontwerp van B. Buurman. Het gebouw grenst met een langs- en eindgevel direct aan de stadsgracht en vult de hoek in van het bastion. Het is alleen met een deel van de noordwest gevel verbonden met de geclusterde bebouwing aan deze oostzijde van het fabrieksterrein.
Omschrijving
Het meelpakhuis, op rechthoekige plattegrond, bestaand uit een betonskelet en gele bakstenen gevels (Vlaams verband), bezit onder een omlopende betonnen luifel ter hoogte van de eerste verdiepingsvloer enkele muuropeningen, (waarin thans ijzeren rolluiken) onder door roeden ingedeelde bovenlichten. Achtzijdige paddenstoel-kolommen zijn op de begane grond half in de gevels geplaatst, dragen de betonnen verdiepingsvloeren van het zeven bouwlagen tellende fabriekspand. De vensters boven de luifel zijn veelal vierruitsramen onder een kunststenen overstek. Op het platte dak bevindt zich op de naar het zuiden gerichte hoek, een transparante dakopbouw. De zeven traveeën tellende voorgevel aan de stadsgracht wordt gekenmerkt door geheel links en rechts een over alle verdiepingen doorlopende vensterstrook, met in de verdieping boven de luifel enkele kleine rondvensters en onder de dakrand vijf ramen. De in opzet identieke eindgevels bevatten op de begane grond vier traveeën, deels met rolluiken ingevuld. Boven de luifel bevat elke eindgevel twee vensterassen, die de middenas van de gevel flankeren. Tegen de langsgevel die naar het binnenterrein is gekeerd, wordt de linkerzijde gedeeltelijk door een onder een scherpe hoek geplaatste silo in beslag genomen. Op de begane grond komen vier openingen voor en in bedoelde hoek een uit 1954 daterend uitgebouwd kantoortje. De gevel bevat boven de luifel zes vensterassen met ramen, waarvan een vensteras bestaat uit een over alle verdiepingen doorlopende vensterstrook en waarboven een hijsbalk is opgenomen. Het interieur bevat paddenstoel-kolommen die in de drie bovenste bouwlagen een geringere diameter bezitten. Op de begane grond wordt het interieur in beslag genomen door vier gescheiden laadruimten ten behoeve van bulkverlading. Op de verdieping komt nog een dubbele spiraalvormige sul voor ten behoeve van het verticale transport van stukgoed in het gebouw. Voorts een houten lift gevat in een betonnen schacht, alsook verticale transportbanden met schoepen.

The flour storage house, on a rectangular floor plan, consisting of a concrete skeleton and yellow brick facades (Flemish bond), has under a continuous concrete canopy at the level of the first floor some wall openings (now containing iron rolling shutters) below glazing-barred fanlights. Eight-sided mushroom columns are placed half in the facades on the ground floor, supporting the concrete floor slabs of the seven-storey factory building. The windows above the canopy are mostly four-pane windows under a cast stone overhang. On the flat roof, at the corner facing south, is a transparent roof structure. The front facade facing the city moat, comprising seven bays, is characterised by entirely on the left and right a window strip running over all storeys, with in the storey above the canopy some small round windows and below the eaves five windows. The identically designed end facades contain on the ground floor four bays, partly filled with rolling shutters. On the upper floor there is still a double spiral-shaped conveyor for the vertical transport of piece goods in the building. Furthermore a wooden lift housed in a concrete shaft, as well as vertical conveyor belts with buckets.
