Inleiding

Introduction

The eclectic COUNTRY HOUSE was built in 1879 on the commission of brewer Vermeulen. The building is situated in a park-like garden. In 1991 it was converted into an office, during which the window arrangement was largely simplified. Various doors had been renewed earlier. The building stands at a crossroads, with the front facades facing towards the Nieuwevaart side.

Description

The two-storey building comprises five bays, the one-and-a-half-storey recessed extensions on the left and right each have one bay. These extensions continue further to the rear. The facades are constructed of handmade brickwork. The hipped roofs with flat roof are covered with slates in Meuse bond. The plinth and window sills are of ashlar. The front facades of the main block and auxiliary buildings are divided vertically by corner pilasters. The central section with entrance is likewise accentuated by pilasters. The arched sash windows and the door at ground level renewed in 1991 have a plastered surround with ears, rosettes, and a hood under which a wreath. The windows in the auxiliary buildings have been converted into door openings, whereby the plastered parapets present elsewhere and the continuous ashlar window sills serving as cornice disappeared.

Below the windows of the first floor is a similar band of cornice, parapet and continuous window sills. The plastered ornamental surround of the sash windows, with a neo-Louis XIV curve, is worked out even more richly here. The central bay contains a balcony on richly ornamented stone consoles. The wrought-iron balustrade is decorated, among other things, with a laurel wreath, rosettes and meander motifs.

The auxiliary buildings are visually linked to the main building by a large wooden canopy placed on each side as a continuation of the cornice. These canopies rest on a slender worked cast-iron column with ornamental consoles in the upper corners. Above these are small arched sash windows in dormer windows. These are visually linked to the main building as the horizontal line of the window sills is carried through, and furthermore by the line of the gutter on reel-shaped brackets.

The main building has a richly plastered frieze with cassettes, ornamented consoles and a dentil moulding under the gutter. The central section is accentuated by a segmental pediment on moulded reel-shaped brackets and dentil moulding. Below this is a round window with ornamental surround. At the four corner points of the roof are chimneys with chevron arch reliefs.

The side facades of the main building have, in the corner with the auxiliary buildings on the ground floor and first floor, a sash window as in the front facade. The plastered frieze is continued around the corner. The side facades of the auxiliary buildings adjoin the main building. The left side facade has four bays. The three windows and door in the second bay from the left are provided with a plastered ornamental surround. The panelled door is accessible via a small landing with steps on either side. The first floor contains three mezzanine windows.

The right side facade has four windows on the ground floor with brick sills and on the first floor an arched roof window with ashlar sill. The rear facades are undecorated. The main building has a central risalit with double back door and two arched windows on either side. On the first floor are five arched windows.

On the rear facade of the extension to the left are two windows on the ground floor and one on the first floor. In the extension to the rear right, on the ground floor and first floor each one window.

On the grounds there are several old deciduous trees.

Valuation

From an architectural-historical perspective, it is important because of the applied stylistic elements and the very rich ornamentation. The building is important because of its integrity.
