SHORT-GABLE FARMHOUSE consisting of dwelling house and former business section under one roof. It is of the low broad type with half-hipped roof, dating from ca. 1840. It is located in the peat village of Nieuwevaart. Alterations ca. 1940, 1950/60, 1990.

Description

The single-storey cellared dwelling house is constructed of handmade brick in cross bond with infill. It is covered with a thatched half-hipped roof. The front facade with four window bays has to the left of centre two six-paned sash windows with shutters. To the right are the entrance with an attached door and divided fanlight with beside it a four-paned sash window with shutters, below which a one-paned cellar window. On the upper floor a four-paned sash window and a recessed semicircular niche. To the left under the half-hipped end a beam end protrudes through the facade. Bands above and below the windows. Staple anchors in all walls. The front facade has a grey rendered plinth and granite step with in front of the entrance a step plate with black/white border mosaic and geometric motifs in the central field. Iron decorative railing with white pointed tops.

Against the right side facade at the height of the kitchen a post-war extension with rear entrance and windows has been placed. Against the barn lies with the ridge perpendicular to the main direction a barn extension under thatched half-hipped roof dating from the 1940s. Of this barn with semiclamped door in the middle and arched hay loft door the facade was renewed in 1950/60. On the farmyard lie three small four-paned and one one-paned window. The left side wall of the dwelling house contains a T-window with shutters. The barn was recently renewed in red machine-made brick. Perpendicular to the rear of the barn lies a widening under thatched roof with the ridge perpendicular to the barn. The rear wall has high attached carriage doors, low stable doors and four-paned arched stable windows.

Internally the house has retained its original layout and parts of its interior. Behind the large front room to the left is a bedroom with wooden wall with alcove beds and cupboards separated by profiled pilasters. Between both rooms is an open semicircular niche analogous to that in the front facade. To the right beside the corridor is the living room with cellar. In the kitchen lies the cellar staircase with beside it a cupboard (former alcove bed) and the upper floor staircase. In the barn three oak collar tie roof truss structures.

Behind the farmhouse a large longitudinal-section barn constructed of handmade brick with infill and black Oudhollandse tiles. High attached carriage doors with bands. Internally three one-sided overhanging collar tie roof truss structures.

The farmhouse is surrounded by a holly and privet hedge. On the farmyard stand three oaks, a chestnut and birch.

Valuation

The farmhouse is of cultural-historical importance as an example of a type characteristic of the region. It has architectural-historical value from the point of view of building technique and history for the way in which expansions of the farmhouse in width under one roof have been carried out in this area. It has ensemble value through its location in a historic-spatial relationship with several monumental farmhouses. The retained original structure and parts of the interior contribute to the architectural integrity of the whole.
