Inleiding

Introduction

The REFORMED CHURCH was built in neo-Gothic style with neoclassical elements in 1884-1886.

Description

The prominently situated single-aisle church hall is directly situated on the street, has a rectangular floor plan and has four bays. On the gabled roof, of which the ridge runs perpendicular to the street, lie black cross tiles. The facades are constructed of red hand-formed brick, reinforced with buttresses with weatherings. The gable ends are covered by a plastered saddle-back moulding. The front facade has a plastered plinth and is articulated vertically by pilasters on the corners and next to the central entrance. On either side of this a pointed-arch window with cast iron tracery of two pointed arches with diamond-shaped decoration and a rose. Both this and the other windows have brick sills. Above the varnished wing door with lintel and pointed arch for relieving is a hard stone facade stone with the text: "Eben-Haezer 2 May 1884". Above this a three-part pointed-arch niche and a round window with cast iron rose. The risalit is crowned by a plastered cornice with triangular pediment. Behind this pediment on a square base stands an octagonal open belfry. Its pointed roof is covered with slate in Maas-bond and is crowned by a weathervane with ornamental wrought metalwork. The sides are further closed by a climbing brick frieze on plastered drop shapes.

The side facades have pointed-arch windows with cast iron tracery as in the front facade, and a tooth course beneath the gutter. The last buttress on the right side is widened with machine-made brick. The rear facade has in the ridge a round window with rose as on the front. The masonry is reinforced with straight wall anchors, on the gable end an ornamental wrought iron piece.

The interior, after the draught vestibule in which a wooden staircase is incorporated for the choir gallery, has an undivided space with white plastered walls. The roses of the pointed-arch windows can be opened as tilting windows from inside. The ceiling consists of a wooden barrel vault with tie rods. These tie rods are provided on the sides and in the middle with moulded knobs. There are two round openings with closing rings cut in the roof frame. In these a meander border is applied along the sides and in the middle a carved wooden rose.

Above the draught vestibule is the choir gallery. The balustrade consists of oak panels, partly provided with carving and worked balusters.

The floor, the church pews, the pulpit and the wooden wainscoting were all renewed around 1960.

Valuation

The church building of the Reformed Church is of general importance. The church is of cultural-historical importance as an example of a spiritual development in which traditional neo-Gothic and neoclassical elements were chosen as a formal language. Architecturally the building is important because of the stylistic elements applied, the use of materials and the characteristic restrained ornamentation. The intactness, in particular of the exterior, is important. Because of its prominent location, the church is significant for the appearance of the village.
