Inleiding.
Het suikerDEPOT is in 1921 gebouwd in Ambachtelijk-Traditionele stijl met elementen van Overgangsarchitectuur. Het is evenwijdig aan de rivier de Mark gebouwd en ligt met de kopse kant aan de haven van Standdaarbuiten. Het maakte onderdeel uit van de in 1868 opgerichte NV Noord-Brabantse Beetwortelsuikerfabriek, die in 1912 was overgenomen door de Wester Suikerrafinaderij te Amsterdam en sinds 1919 onderdeel uitmaakte van de Centrale Suikermaatschapij (CSM). In 1924 is de fabriek opgeheven en deels gesloopt, terwijl het suikerdepot in gebruik bleef bij de CSM. Van de fabriek resteren voorts nog een produktiegebouw en de schoorsteen, aan de overzijde van de haven en de direkteursvilla aan de Veerweg, die alle buiten rijksbescherming vallen.
Omschrijving.
Het eenlaagse suikerdepot op rechthoekig grondplan is opgetrokken uit baksteen en gelegen onder flauw hellend zadeldak, belegd met bitumen. Het is zeventien traveeën lang en negen breed. De traveeën worden van elkaar gescheiden door gemetselde lisenen, die onder de dakrand met elkaar zijn verbonden door een gemetselde profilering. Elk travee is voorzien van een hooggeplaatst, getoogd venster met ijzeren traliewerk en een in later tijd geplaatst ijzeren raam. De topgevels zijn voorzien van een hardstenen daklijst en op de hoeken van een uitkraging in hardsteen met sobere vormgeving. Enkele getoogde deuropeningen in de gevel aan de kadezijde zijn recentelijk dichtgemetseld. Tegen deze gevel is een vierkant eenlaags uitbouwtje geplaatst ten behoeve van de verwarmingsinstallatie. Het heeft een lessenaarsdak en enkele getoogde vensters. In de kopse gevels zijn recentelijk de deuropeningen vergroot en nieuwe deuren geplaatst. De kap wordt gedragen door ijzeren, geklonken vakwerkspanten, die op hun beurt worden ondersteund door een dubbel rij ijzeren samengestelde en geklonken staanders.
Waardering.
Het suikerdepot is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als illustratieve vertegenwoordiger van de geschiedenis van de Nederlandse suikerindustrie, die een belangrijke concentratie kende in het noordwesten van de provincie Noord-Brabant (De Suikerhoek). Het heeft architectuurhistorische waarde vanwege de Ambachtelijk-Traditionele bouwstijl met elementen van Overgangsarchitectuur. Het heeft bouwhistorische waarde vanwege de toegepaste bouwmaterialen, met name de ijzeren spanten en staanders. Het heeft ensemblewaarde vanwege de ligging ten opzichte van de rivier de Mark en de haven van Standdaarbuiten en vanwege de samenhang met de andere resterende bouwwerken van de suikerfabriek. Introduction.
The sugar depot was built in 1921 in the Artisanal-Traditional style with elements of Transition architecture. It was built parallel to the river Mark and is situated with its end to the harbour of Standdaarbuiten. It formed part of the NV Noord-Brabantse Beetwortelsuikerfabriek established in 1868, which was taken over in 1912 by the Wester Suikerrafinaderij in Amsterdam and since 1919 had been part of the Centrale Suikermaatschapij (CSM). In 1924 the factory was closed and partly demolished, while the sugar depot remained in use by the CSM. From the factory there remain furthermore a production building and the chimney, on the opposite side of the harbour and the director's villa on the Veerweg, which all fall outside national monument protection.
Description.
The single-storey sugar depot on rectangular ground plan is constructed of brick and situated under a gently sloping gabled roof, covered with bitumen. It is seventeen bays long and nine wide. The bays are separated from each other by masonry lesenes, which are connected to each other beneath the roof edge by masonry moulding. Each bay is provided with a high-placed, arched window with iron grille work and an iron window frame placed at a later date. The end gables are provided with a hard stone drip moulding and at the corners with a hard stone projection with austere design. Several arched door openings in the gable at the quay side have recently been bricked up. Against this gable a small square single-storey extension has been placed for the heating installation. It has a lean-to roof and several arched windows. In the end gables the door openings have recently been enlarged and new doors placed. The roof structure is carried by iron, riveted roof truss structures, which in turn are supported by a double row of iron composite and riveted columns.
Valuation.
The sugar depot is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an illustrative representative of the history of the Dutch sugar industry, which had an important concentration in the north-west of the province of Noord-Brabant (the Sugar Corner). It has architectural-historical value because of the Artisanal-Traditional building style with elements of Transition architecture. It has building-historical value because of the applied building materials, in particular the iron roof truss structures and columns. It has ensemble value because of its situation with respect to the river Mark and the harbour of Standdaarbuiten and because of the coherence with the other remaining structures of the sugar factory. It is well-preserved and a rare example of the sugar depot type.
