The register's description

Inleiding

Voormalige Duitstalige kloosterschool, 1900, in traditionele stijl.

Introduction

Former German-language convent school, 1900, in traditional style. Component and as such the second extension of the monastery of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart at Leijenbroek. This school wing was built transversely against the northern gable of the cloister wing from 1896, extending easterly towards the Leijenbroekerweg. The fire escape attached to the south facade is EXCLUDED from protection.

Description

Convent school with basement storey, three STOREYS and attic storey on a rectangular GROUND PLAN. The whole is covered by a composite GABLED AND HIPPED ROOF with pantiles. Gutters. Roof lights and a chimney with moulded rim on the southern roof slope, a chimney above the gable corner on the northern roof slope.

The convent school is built in brick, laid in English bond, with cut joints. Light red profile bricks. Stone, plasterwork.

The regularly divided SOUTH FACADE counts five window axes over three storeys. The facade has a moulded base with red brick profile string course and is horizontally divided by continuous stone sill courses. In the first and second storey are rectangular wooden cross windows placed in pointed arch string courses, with decorative brickwork in the fill pieces. In the first axis of the first storey is an entrance unit, in which the original door has been replaced by a rectangular wooden door of smaller size. Above this door a new surround. The original pointed arch-shaped fanlight string course with stone door lintel, rectangular vertically divided wooden fanlight and decorative brickwork in the fill piece has remained intact.

The third storey is provided with rectangular vertically divided wooden windows with horizontally divided glazing panels, in a segmental arch string course with plastered fill pieces. Renewed arch surrounds. Cornice with mouse-tooth decorations.

The WEST FACADE and the EAST FACADE are hidden from view by the 'Kaiserbau' built respectively in 1913 and the convent church from 1928.

The NORTH FACADE is asymmetrically divided. In the partly moulded base with red profile string course five varying segmental arch-shaped wooden basement windows, partly provided with grilles. The gable arrangement horizontally accented by stone sill courses is interrupted by two series placed one above the other with three coupled, horizontally divided steel pointed arch windows with coloured glass. In the lower series the windows are partly bricked up.

In the remaining window axes - two to the west and four to the east of the staircase - rectangular wooden cross windows with horizontally divided glazing panel are placed in the first and second storey. These windows are somewhat recessed in a pointed arch-shaped string course with roll mouldings and plaiting in the fill pieces. In the third storey rectangular, vertically divided wooden windows with a horizontally divided glazing panel. These windows have a segmental arch string course with plastered fill piece. The first window axis on the east side is concealed from view in the first storey by the connecting passage between the German-language school and the sacristy of the convent church.

The INTERIOR of the convent school, consisting almost entirely of classrooms, has been adapted.

Valuation

The cloister wing of the former German-language school is of general interest and has cultural-historical value as an expression of cultural, spiritual and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the building style, aesthetic quality and ornamental details. The convent school is an essential component of the Sacred Heart monastery, which by virtue of its situation is linked with the development of the old hamlet of Leijenbroek and the rural area of Sittard. The building is of reasonable significance for the character of the municipality of Sittard. With regard to the exterior, the convent school possesses a reasonable to high degree of architectural integrity and is important in relation to the visual integrity of the built environment. Furthermore, the convent school possesses, in a regional perspective, some architectural-historical and notably a high cultural-historical rarity value.
