The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

In Almkerk, the Voorstraat is one of the oldest centres. On its north side lies a VILLA built before 1863, probably built by a gentleman farmer. It was subsequently inhabited by minister Donker, after which it served as a doctor's residence and practice from before the Second World War until 1974. In the front facade is stated: QUA TER NES. The building has elements of Neo-Classicism. It is a detached house with on the east side a later detached double garage under a gabled roof with black renewed Dutch tiles and on the front a large front garden with old trees. A gravel path leads to the entrance, which since the time it was a doctor's practice is situated in the eastern side facade. In this facade, under two unequal height gabled roofs with hip, the section to the right of the entrance also dates from that period and functioned at the time as pharmacy and waiting room, while to the left of the entrance was the consulting room. In the space behind the waiting room difficult to trace alterations have been made. The current owner has relocated the staircase to the cellar in the lower rear structure, installed new sanitary facilities and relocated marble fireplaces from elsewhere in the main living rooms. On the front facade a different brickwork under the soffits of the round-arch windows indicates alterations.

Description.

The two-storey, partly cellaraged dwelling house has a rectangular ground plan under a composite roof. The main volume has a gabled roof, covered with dark renewed Dutch tiles. The single-storey volumes on either side have gabled roofs with hip with dark old Dutch tiles and stand at right angles to the main volume. In the hip of the south-eastern volume a one-light roof dormer. At the eaves for the most part gutter mouldings. Rod anchors in side and rear facades. The main volume has rendered rear and side facades, while the side facades of the low volumes are built of inferior quality brickwork and mortar above a rendered plinth. In the symmetrical front facade lies a two-storey projecting volume crowned with a pediment between single-storey side sections. The three-bay projecting part is finished with a frieze, in which the house name QUA TER NES is placed in three parts and separated by rosettes. Above this lies the pediment with a semicircular oculus, within which a half-round window with baldachin tracery in a grey and white rendered field. The front facade has a natural stone plinth and is built of dark brickwork with struck joint. In the middle section below lie six-light windows with semicircular fanlights with baldachin tracery within a round arch with stretchers. The same finish is applied to the centrally placed back-light panel door. On the upper storey and in the side risalits lie six-light sash windows, the most commonly applied window type. In the west facade lie a six-light sash window, two six-light panel doors with two-light and a four-light sash window. In the rear facade lie a six-light sash window, two new double panel windows, a new rear door and on the upper storey various types of windows.

In the east facade centrally situated the entrance with a panel door with small wrought-iron grille and undivided light. On either side two six-light sash windows. In front of the door a large hardstone step plate. In the rectangular ground plan after the entrance and vestibule lies the central corridor, covered with travertine on black marble, across the house to the western side door. At the front lie three main living rooms connected to each other by semicircular arched openings. At the rear lies the main volume on a lower level than the corner volumes. Lower lie the former pantry and entrance to the cellar covered with black tiles that lies beneath the central sitting room. On the upper storey where the main volume connects to the corner volumes there is a change in level. Centrally in the central corridor lies the stairwell with a spiral staircase with volute decoration on the inner newel and richly ornamented stair newel. In this area rich stucco ornamentation has been placed around the light opening and on two round arches. Apart from this decoration, from the interior are notably: stucco work with floral motifs in the middle and corner sections of the sitting room, one pair of original sliding blinds with mechanism in the south-eastern corner room, folding blinds in the central sitting room, beam ceiling in the pantry, two original panel doors in the vestibule and four Philibert trusses in the attic.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as testimony to the socio-economic development of the region and as an example of the typological development of villa construction, in particular because of the rare building type with high central section and low side wings. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the aesthetic quality of the whole and on the grounds of the exceptional detailing of the exterior and parts of the interior. The house has ensemble value with the large front garden and old trees as a characteristic component of the buildings on the Voorstraat. It has been preserved largely in good condition.
