Inleiding

Introduction

The COUNTRY HOUSE "Roucouleur" is situated in a park in the landscape style along the Glorieuxlaan. This estate was formerly known by the name "Klein Reeburg". The building was constructed in 1884 in a neo-Gothic style with neo-Romanesque elements in castle motifs, designed by the 's-Hertogenbosch architect L.C. Hezenmans. The client was the wine merchant and former mayor A.M.J.T. van Rijckevorsel. The name "Roucouleur" is probably derived from the French word "roucouler", which means 'the cooing of doves', which in turn refers to the dovecote built above the rear facade of the country house. In 1899 the country house came into the possession of the Ursuline sisters, who renamed the building "Maria-oord" and established a normal school and later a teacher training college within it. Today the country house is in use as a business premises.

Description

The country house has a rectangular ground plan and comprises two storeys plus a high basement. It has a slightly projecting gabled roof covered with slate. The roof has on the front two, on the rear one small wooden roof dormer. Below this a gutter bracket on corbels. The building has an asymmetrical structure and on the southeastern corner has a square corner tower with a hipped roof. The walls are constructed in brick with bands of yellow stone, natural stone elements and a frieze with a decorative brick pattern below the windows of the upper storey. Along the top of the facades runs a arcade frieze. The south facade has a central risalit with a stepped gable. To the left of this, at the height of the principal living rooms, windows with T-windows under relieving arches. The central risalit has a slightly projecting central section, ending at roof level in a balcony. In this lies the main entrance. This consists of a wooden panelled door with windows, in front of which is ornamental ironwork. Distinctive door knobs in the form of doves. Semicircular fanlight under arch, likewise provided with ornamental ironwork. Above this two round-arch windows and on either side of the projecting entrance section right-angled windows with leaded glass fanlight. In the stepped gable a pointed-arch niche has been inserted, with within it a double balcony door.

Above this a round window. Above the niche a medallion designed by Hezenmans, placed at the commission of the Ursuline sisters in 1899, with the inscription "Sub Tutela Matris". To the right of the central risalit a large arched window with leaded glass window for the staircase. To the right of this and in the corner tower right-angled windows with T-windows. At the height of the roof edge the tower has above a round-arch frieze a slightly projecting section.

The right side facade has to the right of the corner tower a stepped gable. In the middle of this a slightly projecting wall section with window. On either side of this right-angled windows: on the bel-etage large windows with basket arches, on the storeys above smaller windows with T-windows, on the second storey provided with round arches.

The rear facade of the country house is symmetrical on a number of elements and has in the middle a dovecote projecting above the roof, resting on a downward-tapering projection in the facade. To the left of this, at the height of the chapel, a small corner turret with a pointed pyramid roof. Within it a round-arch window with leaded glass. Also in this facade right-angled windows with T-window and relieving arch.

The left side facade has a gable, of which the central section is formed by a three-sided bay window. This is closed at the top by a stepped gable, flanked by two narrow octagonal turrets with slit windows, as a stylistic quotation derived from castle Maurick in Vught. On the bel-etage and first storey right-angled windows with T-window and relieving arch. On the upper storey in the bay window T-windows with ashlar surround at the top. On either side of the bay window small round windows.

In the interior a large number of original elements are still present. The vestibule has a particularly rich decoration: a white marble wainscoting and tall oak panelled doors. These have an oak surround with a cornice with consoles in the form of lion heads. Beam ceiling with primary and secondary beams and keystones with acanthus motif. Staircase with large oak staircase and stair balusters with small lion heads. Here too a richly decorated beam ceiling. Also particular is the chapel, a space with three cross-rib vaults. Corbels decorated with the coats of arms of Van Rijckevorsel and his wife Theresia Maria Bonnike. Above the chapel entrance a relief with "Bread and Fish" motif.
