Inleiding

Introduction

The COUNTRY HOUSE "Huize Bergen" is located in a park in landscape style, at the corner of the Boxtelseweg and the Glorieuxlaan. The country house, which displays elements of traditionalism, was built in 1915 according to a design by architect J. Hanrath. The country house replaced a country house from the nineteenth century belonging to the couple Fentener van Vlissingen. In 1928 the country house came into the possession of the couple Van Beuningen.

Description

The country house has a roughly rectangular floor plan and displays a largely symmetrical composition. The building has a basement and comprises two storeys under a composite hipped roof with slate in Maas bond. On this roof four high chimneys and roof dormers above the east and west facades. On the northern side facade there is a single-storey side wing with three window bays under a flat roof. The walls of the country house are constructed of brick and are concluded at the top by a cornice formed by two slightly projecting brick courses. The entrance section is located in the western facade of the country house. This has projecting corner sections and a misalignment risalit with the entrance section within it. In the projecting sections cross windows with leaded glass in the upper lights. In the recessed facade sections narrow vertical monastery windows. In the parapet of the windows on the upper storey casements. The entrance is located in a shallow porticus executed in natural stone, which is provided on both sides with two columns with a base in which abstract-geometric ornaments are applied. The entrance, which is accessed via a low flight of steps, consists of a wooden panelled door with a four-pane fanlight and two windows on either side of the door. Above this a shallow balcony with iron railings. Above the risalits are roof dormers with curved windows with leaded glass, above the recessed sections roof dormers with single-pane windows.

In the northern end facade of the country house on the right a single-storey extension for the kitchen. To the left of this a four-sided enclosed bay comprising two storeys and provided with narrow vertical two-pane windows. In the roof slope above this facade two small roof dormers.

The eastern facade of the country house, which overlooks the park, likewise has projecting corner sections comprising two window bays. In this eastern facade likewise cross windows with leaded glass in the upper lights. In the recessed central section on the ground floor a double opening garden door flanked by two adjacent large windows, provided with three-pane leaded glass fanlights. Above this a balcony, resting on double columns. The southern end facade has like the north facade on the right side a four-sided enclosed bay. This facade is provided with cross windows. On the upper storey, at the level of the staircase a larger nine-pane window with leaded glass panes. On the left side of the southern facade a single-storey extension under a flat roof with veranda. This is provided with a double opening wooden door -accessible via a brick flight of steps- and fanlights with leaded glass panes. To the right of this extension a four-sided enclosed bay with narrow vertical two-pane windows with leaded glass.

In the interior of the country house several original elements are still present. Thus we find here among others a wooden staircase from the construction period, of which the railing and stair stringers are provided with decorative wood carving; in the hall and the rooms on the ground floor wooden wainscoting, wooden heating encasements. In the hall a wooden beam ceiling and a fireplace with a mantelpiece of sandstone and marble. Stucco ceilings in living rooms on the ground floor. The walls of the staircase on the southern side of the country house are provided with decorative tiles.

Valuation

The country house "Huize Bergen" is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as an illustration of the importance of Vught as a rural settlement with many estates near 's-Hertogenbosch. The country house is of architectural-historical importance as an example of a country house in traditionalist style and because of the place it occupies within the work of architect Hanrath: the country house has a significantly more rigorous design than his other country houses. The country house has ensemble value because of the visual relationship between building and landscaping and the stylistic coherence of main and ancillary buildings. The country house is important because of the relatively high intactness of interior and exterior.
