Inleiding
Het GRAFMONUMENT van J.A.F. Lips (1829 - 1897) bevindt zich rechts van het centrale pad over de Rooms-Katholieke Begraafplaats. J.A.F. Lips was pastoor in Mariapolder (1863-1880) en Vught (1880 - 1897). Het grafmonument dateert uit omstreeks 1897. Op de achterzijde van het beeld een inscriptie met de initialen H v.d. G (H. van der Geld).
Omschrijving
Het grafmonument heeft een rechthoekige grondslag. Het is opgebouwd uit een hardstenen tombe met grafplaat, waarboven een sokkel met daarop een zandstenen beeld, voorstellende een zittende engel met twee schilden. De sokkel heeft een vooruitspringend middendeel, waarop een marmeren plaat is aangebracht. Hierop een afbeelding van en kelk, hostie en amict. Aan weerszijde hiervan, op de terugliggende gedeelten van de sokkel twee hardstenen platen, waarop in laagreliëf kerken zijn weergegeven. Boven de sokkel de zandstenen engel, zittend op een rots afgebeeld. De engel houdt twee schilden vast, waarin de teksten: "Laat de kleinen tot mij komen" (links) en "Koningin van den allerheiligsten Rozenkrans, bid voor ons" (rechts). Over het schild aan de rechterzijde is een rozenkrans in hoogreliëf afgebeeld. De engel draagt schuin over zijn borst een tekstband met de woorden "Bemind zij overal het H. Hart van Jezus".
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling. The GRAVE MONUMENT of J.A.F. Lips (1829 - 1897) is located to the right of the central path across the Roman Catholic Cemetery. J.A.F. Lips was vicar in Mariapolder (1863-1880) and Vught (1880 - 1897). The grave monument dates from approximately 1897. On the back of the sculpture an inscription with the initials H v.d. G (H. van der Geld).
Description
The grave monument has a rectangular ground plan. It is constructed from a hardstone tomb with grave slab, above which a plinth with thereon a sandstone sculpture, representing a seated angel with two shields. The plinth has a projecting central section, on which a marble slab has been attached. On this an image of a chalice, host and amict. On either side thereof, on the recessed sections of the plinth two hardstone slabs, on which churches are depicted in low relief. Above the plinth the sandstone angel, depicted seated on a rock. The angel holds two shields, in which the texts: "Let the little ones come unto me" (left) and "Queen of the most Holy Rosary, pray for us" (right). Over the shield on the right side a rosary is depicted in high relief. The angel wears diagonally across his chest a text band with the words "Beloved everywhere be the Sacred Heart of Jesus".
Valuation
The object is of general importance. It possesses cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a spiritual development. The object possesses art-historical value through distinctive use of materials and ornamentation, through the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the grave monument and as a distinctive example of neo-Gothic sculpture, in particular within the oeuvre of H. van der Geld.
