Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Omschrijving.
Waardering.

Description
Introduction.
Behind the monastery lies a large CHAPEL, built in 1939 according to a design by architect J.J.M. van Halteren. The chapel is built in a Traditionalist style. Against the rear side of the left wing of the monastery is a connecting corridor, also built in Traditionalist style.
Description.
This connecting corridor has small square windows. The chapel is executed in brick in monastery-size format. The roofs are covered with slates and provided with roof dormers. The chapel has a broad central nave of five bays under a gabled roof and low, narrow side aisles with lean-to roofs. The choir consists of one bay with three-sided closure and has a lower ambulatory with buttresses. The choir bay is crowned by a large square tower with a spire, which dominates the object. The tower is provided with small corner turrets and is crowned by a wrought-iron cross with a weathercock. The transept arms are straight-ended. In front of the transepts are lower building masses on either side of the nave under gabled roofs. The front porch is somewhat lower than the nave. Above the arched double door is a sandstone relief in the tympanum of the pointed arch. This relief is from the hand of A. Meertens and depicts Christ the King receiving the adoration of Saint Francis and Saint Clare. An inscription is placed in a border around it: "Through my love I shall reign". The side facades are articulated by buttresses. Between them are pointed arch windows in the side aisles and in the clerestory, filled with stained glass. In the choir are pointed arch windows with brick tracery, filled with stained glass. In the transepts elongated pointed arch windows with stained glass, the gable tops are provided with weaving patterns.
The interior of the chapel is still in its original condition. Between the central nave and side aisles stand square pillars with sandstone capitals, worked with reliefs. In the central nave a pointed arch vault, the side aisles are vaulted by brick star vaults. The choir has an ambulatory with pointed arch gallery on narrow columns. The stained glass windows in the choir are from the hand of H. Collen and P. Wiegersma. In the nave the windows were designed by T. Dekkers. Side altars are equipped with opaline representations by Jan Mammen. The monastery grounds are separated from the adjoining churchyard by a low wall with a half-round top.
Valuation.
The chapel is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value; it is an expression of a spiritual development, namely the rise and flourishing of Catholic congregations and is also an example of the typological development of the monastic chapel. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the detailing, the building style and the place the building occupies in the oeuvre of architect Van Halteren. The chapel is important because of the integrity of its interior and exterior.
