Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The U-shaped MONASTERY with RECTOR'S HOUSE was built in 1869-1872 according to a design by P.J.H. Cuypers in a practical Craft-Traditional building style customary for monasteries with influences of Neo-Renaissance.
Description.
The U-shaped monastic complex is entirely executed in brick and has a composite mansard roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The facades are provided with a slightly projecting plinth with a natural stone capping and are enlivened by yellow-painted ashlar courses. The facades have a vertical articulation through pilasters, closed at the top with a dentil moulding. The central wing has a middle risalit three bays wide, three storeys high under a perpendicular gabled roof. This section intersects the longitudinal wing and is also recognisable on the rear side. In the centre of the roof is a small turret with a spire. On either side of the risalit the central wing is five axes wide and two storeys high. At the ends are perpendicular wings, positioned slightly forward in relation to the central wing. The end facades of these are three storeys high and three axes wide. The gable tops of both the end facades of the perpendicular wings and of the middle risalit are crowned with neo-Renaissance formed gable tops. The gable tops at the ends have plastered fields with a frame. Within this "ANNO DNI" and "MDCCCLXXII" are depicted in relief.
On the ground floor eight-paned windows are installed, on the upper storeys six-paned windows. All provided with plastic frames. In the segmental arches above the windows the red bricks are alternated with yellow-painted bricks. Furthermore, the window tympana with round arches (on the first and second storey of the middle risalit and first storey and in the centre of the second storey on the end facades, the rest is provided with segmental arches) have a mosaic pattern executed in yellow-painted stone. Under the windows are hard stone window sills, continuing in drip mouldings. The door in the centre is located in a small porch, in front of it is a natural stone staircase. The right side wing is shortened to four bays in favour of the new extension wing. The left section is eleven window axes long. The windows of the side facades and rear facade are the same as those in the front facade. In the rear facade, in the centre of the longitudinal wing there is a block-shaped extension under a gabled roof (rear of the middle risalit). In the corners between longitudinal and transverse wings stand round stair turrets with spires. The rear of the side wings are provided with a stepped frieze in the gable top.
In the interior of the monastery the layout of corridors with rooms has been preserved. The old outer wall, on the right, now inner wall between old and new construction remains visible. The furnishings and decoration have been modernised.
Valuation.
The monastery is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value; it is an expression of a spiritual development, namely the rise and flourishing of Catholic congregations and is also an example of the typological development of the congregational monastery. It is of architectural-historical importance because of the detailing, the building style and the place the building occupies in the oeuvre of architect Cuypers. It has been preserved in excellent condition.
