Inleiding
Voormalig SOCIëTEITSGEBOUW annex SCHOUWBURG en CONCERTZAAL, in Eclectische stijl uit 1887. Anno 1998 in gebruik als bioscoop "Cinecittà". Het is gebouwd door het bestuur van de Liedertafel "Souvenir des Montagnards", ter vervanging van "De Oude Comedie", die in 1869 plaats moest maken voor de aanleg van de Comediestraat (sinds 1881 Willem II straat genoemd). De Liedertafel beoefende hier de zangkunst en het amateurtoneel. Het geheel ligt op een rechthoekig perceel. In de voorbouw bevond zich de sociëteit en aansluitend in de achterbouw een grote concert- tevens toneelzaal met ernaast een foyer en binnentuin. De achterbouw, die gedeeltelijk vrij staat grenst aan de IJzerstraat. De binnentuin en foyer zijn samengevoegd tot een middenzaal. De ingangspartij uit ca. 1970, links van de voorbouw, valt buiten de bescherming.
Omschrijving
De voor- en de achterbouw hebben een rechthoekige plattegrond. De sociëteit bestaat uit drie bouwlagen inclusief de kelder- en een zolderverdieping waarvan de onderste de kelder is. Ze wordt gedekt door een zadeldak gelegen tussen tuitgevels voorzien van grijze verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De nok ligt parallel aan de straat. De symmetrische voorgevel van vijf traveeën heeft zijrisalieten. De muuropeningen worden op de begane grond gesloten door een rondboog en op de verdieping door een spiegelboog. Ze hebben geprofileerde stuclijsten met een kuifbekroning, op de begane grond zijn ze bovendien afgezet door stucpilasters. De kelder heeft ventilatiespleten in de plint. De ingangspartij, in de rechter travee, heeft een klein portiek met hardstenen bordes en drie frontale traptreden. De vensters van de begane grond zijn dichtgezet ten behoeve van de derde filmzaal. Op de verdieping bevindt zich, over drie traveeën breed, een balkon, dat wordt geflankeerd door twee T-vormige vensters. Het rust op zes voluutvormige consoles. Het balkon heeft een gietijzeren balustrade met florale motieven. Het is bereikbaar via drie dubbele deuren van de bovenzaal. In het dak drie gestucte stenen kapellen gedekt door een zadeldakje met in elk een oeil de boeuf. De kapellen boven de risalieten hebben festoenen, klauwstukken en een smeedijzeren bekroning. De middenkapel bestaat uit een tuitgevel bekroond door een gebogen tympaan. De schouwburg- annex concertzaal is drie traveeën breed en zes diep. Ze wordt gedekt door een zadeldak met houten spanten met ronde trekijzers, waarvan de nok loodrecht op de voorbouw staat en is voorzien van grijze verbeterde Hollandse pannen met een tuitgevel aan de IJzerstraat. In de zijgevels lisenen met in elke travee bovenin een rondvenster. Ter hoogte van de toneelvloer en de kelder bevinden zich in de tuitgevel dichtgezette muuropeningen met in de top een groot rondvenster. De middenzaal wordt gedeeltelijk gedekt door een lessenaarsdak met geschulpte houten windveren en een plat dak. In de lange zijgevel getoogde en rondboogvormige dichtgezette muuropeningen van de oorspronkelijke foyer en binnentuin. Het opgaande werk bestaat uit een rode handgevormde baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband. De voorgevel van de voorbouw heeft een basement met een granito-afwerking, een cementen cordon en een zwaar bewerkte kroonlijst met fries en tien consoles.
De traveemaat van de zalen wordt in beide zijgevels geaccentueerd door lisenen. Het interieur van het sociëteitsgebouw bevat ondermeer twee boven elkaar gelegen zalen met in het trappenhuis bordestrappen naar de verschillende bouwlagen met leuningen, gedraaide balusters, gestoken kuipstukken en leuningwrongen. De zaal beneden heeft een rijk bewerkt stucplafond met rand en spiegelrand en in de plafonnière vier uitspringende engeltjes omringd door vruchten. De zaal boven heeft een stucplafond met rondom een licht- en/of ventilatiekoof en in de voormuur ronde gietijzeren instelbare ventilatieroosters. De kelder van de sociëteit bevat ondermeer twee gemetselde parallel gelegen tongewelven evenwijdig aan de straat met wijnnissen. De grote zaal met balkon bevat het oorspronkelijke podium met eronder kleedkamers. Plafond en wanden hebben fraai stucwerk met geprofileerde lijsten bij de rondvensters met kuifbekroning en ornamenten bekleed. In de zijgevel aan de kant van de foyer en binnentuin vijf portes-brisées met vijf bossingpanelen. Achter het jutebehang in de middenzaal bevinden zich schilderingen met afbeeldingen van verschillende componisten.
Waardering
Het voormalig sociëteitsgebouw met concert- en toneelzaal is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stichting van verenigingsgebouwen voor de elite van de industriesteden; het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van de sociëteit. Architectuurhistorisch is het van belang vanwege de stijl. Het heeft ensemblewaarde als onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch, architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig van nationaal belang is. Former SOCIETY BUILDING with THEATRE and CONCERT HALL, in Eclectic style from 1887. As of 1998 in use as a cinema "Cinecittà". Description
The front and rear buildings have a rectangular floor plan. The society consists of three storeys including a basement and an attic storey, the lowest being the basement. It is covered by a gabled roof situated between spout gables fitted with grey improved Dutch tiles. The ridge runs parallel to the street. The symmetrical front facade of five bays has side risalites. The wall openings are closed on the ground floor by a round arch and on the upper storey by a blind arch. They have moulded stucco lintels with a cyma moulding, on the ground floor they are moreover set off by stucco pilasters. The basement has ventilation slits in the plinth. The entrance section, in the right bay, has a small porch with sandstone platform and three front steps. The windows of the ground floor are blocked for the benefit of the third cinema screen. On the upper storey there is, spanning three bays wide, a balcony, which is flanked by two T-shaped windows. It rests on six scroll-shaped consoles. The balcony has a cast-iron balustrade with floral motifs. It is accessible via three double doors from the upper hall. In the roof three stuccoed stone pavilions covered by a small gabled roof each with an oeil de boeuf. The pavilions above the risalites have festoons, corner brackets and a wrought-iron crown. The central pavilion consists of a spout gable crowned by a curved tympanum. The theatre with concert hall is three bays wide and six deep. It is covered by a gabled roof with timber trusses with round tie-rods, of which the ridge is perpendicular to the front building and is fitted with grey improved Dutch tiles with a spout gable towards the IJzerstraat. In the side facades pilasters with in each bay at the top a round window. At the level of the stage floor and basement there are in the spout gable blocked wall openings with at the top a large round window. The central hall is partially covered by a lean-to roof with carved timber wind braces and a flat roof. In the long side facade arched and round-arch shaped blocked wall openings of the original foyer and interior courtyard. The masonry consists of red hand-formed bricks laid in common bond. The front facade of the front building has a basement with granito finish, a cement string course and a heavily worked cornice with frieze and ten consoles.
The bay spacing of the halls is accentuated in both side facades by pilasters. The interior of the society building contains among other things two halls situated one above the other with in the stairwell flight stairs to the various storeys with railings, turned balusters, fielded panels and railing knots. The lower hall has a richly worked stucco ceiling with border and mirror border and in the ceiling medallion four projecting cherubs surrounded by fruit. The upper hall has a stucco ceiling with around it a light and/or ventilation coffer and in the front wall round cast-iron adjustable ventilation grilles. The basement of the society contains among other things two mortared parallel barrel vaults parallel to the street with wine alcoves. The large hall with balcony contains the original stage with dressing rooms below it. Ceiling and walls have fine stucco work with moulded lintels at the round windows with cyma moulding and ornaments covered. In the side facade towards the foyer and interior courtyard five folding doors with five bossed panels. Behind the jute covering in the central hall are paintings with depictions of various composers.
