Inleiding

Introduction

The MANUFACTURER'S VILLA was built in 1929-1930 in Expressionist style to a design by architect J. de Lugt for textile manufacturer Arn. Eras. Around 1993 the gate lodge with the left-hand neighbouring building was demolished in favour of the construction of a new main entrance. The building served as an office in 1999.

Description

The two-storey villa has a rectangular plan under a composite hipped roof with red newly improved Dutch roof tiles. The facades are built of machine-made brick with a blocked black natural stone plinth and speckle courses of concrete with gravel. The left section, in the building line, has on the ground floor and first floor a composite six-part window with a granite surround and intermediate mullions. The fanlights are leaded glass.

The gable, with a right-angled gabled roof behind it, is entirely executed in natural stone and has an oeil de boeuf with leaded glass and ornamental reliefs around it. The rest of the facade steps back. In the side facade of the aforementioned projection is on the ground floor and first floor each a window. The first has a view over the entrance. A broad concrete canopy on granite pillars overshadows wooden doors with leaded glass panes. The plinths and pillars themselves are, in contrast to the rough granite elsewhere, polished. Beside this is a foundation stone: "This stone was laid by Arnoud Eras 2 January 1930". Above the canopy are two coupled windows in leaded glass. Next to the entrance is a granite three-sided bay window over two storeys, under a flat roof.

The windows are provided with leaded glass. The parapet has a decorative relief pattern in the middle. The wooden gutter bracket projects far out. In the middle of the roof surface is a three-part roof dormer with an arched roof. The right side facade springs out after a short blind section; a window is placed in this corner. On the ground floor this facade has two further doors with a broad window between them. On the first floor there are two four-pane windows. The left side facade is largely knocked out and altered in favour of the new entrance. In the middle is the leaded glass panel that illuminates the staircase behind it. The rear facade has in the middle a large pentagonal bay window with mortared parapet. To the left of this are French doors with above the lintel a leaded glass window with gravel concrete lintel. To the right of the bay window a broad window. All day edges of window and door openings are provided with ornamental brickwork in this facade. The windows in this facade and the side facade have roller shutters with bronze roller shutter boxes. On the first floor there are two further large windows. In the middle of the roof surface is a three-part roof dormer with an arched roof.

The building possesses various ornamental fences. The front garden is screened by a low wrought-iron fence. The drive next to it is set off by a low double fence between mortared posts with natural stone ornamental spheres. A little further on at the side entrance are high sheet-iron fences, provided with curls and points.

Via the main entrance one enters the draught lobby. The floor is of grey-green marble, the high wainscoting of dark green polished marble in which a radiator is incorporated in a flowing manner. There is a sober stucco ceiling with concentric lines and profiled edges. The dark wooden draught doors are provided with Art Deco glass. Behind this is the central hall. This has, like the other rooms on the ground floor, dark wooden parquet flooring. Various types of wood are used. The ceiling has a coffered division and dark wood is also used for the wainscoting, the broad main staircase and the decorative fireplace in the corner. This fireplace has a marble interior lining and a wooden frame in which a carved relief is incorporated of a bearded man warming his hands by an open fire. Cupboards for the radiators are incorporated in the wainscoting. All panelled doors have decorative carved work in Art Deco style of butterflies, insects and free ornament.

To the right of the draught lobby is a large room with a sober fireplace and a niche in which a corner bench belonging to the furnishings is placed. The parquet here has a black meander pattern as a border. The door behind leads to a corridor with terrazzo flooring and tiled walls, which opens onto the side door. A door leads to the kitchen. The rear room borders the rear facade. This space has a vaulted stucco ceiling and a large pentagonal bay window. On the left wall is a fireplace. To the left of the draught lobby is a room and via a transverse corridor one reaches the sanitary group. Both the small hall, the room with wash basin and the lavatory room itself are lined with nuanced green clouded tiles and black border tiles, all three have a leaded glass fanlight. The hall and the room with wash basin have a terrazzo floor. The wash basin is of black with white and gold veined marble in a chrome surround, with mirror. Next to this is a chrome-plated heated towel rack. The lavatory room has a floor of grey-green marble and, next to the toilet, a long narrow urinal built into the right wall. The main staircase in the central hall has broad balusters and a main baluster of wood. The sturdy squat main form of it is offset by refined carved work. The staircase is illuminated by three rectangular panels with Art Deco glass. On the landing there is again a radiator with cupboard. The rooms here were executed in light colours during the conversion to office.

Valuation

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of a social-economic development, namely the construction of manufacturers' villas within the existing urban fabric; it is also of importance for the typological development of the manufacturers' villa. From an architectural-historical perspective the building is valuable because of its style, the particular use of materials and ornamentation and as an example of the work of the architect. The building has ensemble value as part of a larger whole, which is of national importance from a cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning perspective. Finally, the building is important because of the integrity of its interior and exterior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban built environment.
