Inleiding
Het blok WINKEL-WOONHUIZEN werd gebouwd in circa 1890 in Neo-Renaissance-stijl en maakt onderdeel uit van een ononderbroken gevelrij in de binnenstad. Het oorspronkelijke interieur van de panden 104-106 is bij de verbouwing tot boekhandel geheel uitgebroken. Achter nummer 108 bevindt zich een aanbouw van architect Barenbrug.
Omschrijving
Het tweelaagse blok woon-winkelhuizen heeft een mansardekap met schubleien en is opgetrokken uit machinale baksteen. Horizontale geleding vindt plaats door een hardstenen plint, cordonlijsten en speklagen. Door terugspringing in de gevel ter plekke van de poortdoorgangen is er een optische driedeling van het blok in twee delen van drie en één deel van vier vensterassen. De poort tussen 104 en 106 is dichtgemetseld. De linkergevel is half vrijstaand, een poort leidt naar het achterterrein. De winkelpuien zijn uitgevoerd in hout. De brede pilasters hebben decoratieve elementen als verdiepte velden, cirkels, banden, Vlaamse Renaissancewortels en diamantkoppen onder de geprofileerde kroonlijst. In het midden de dubbele paneeldeur met glaspanelen en kussens als winkelentree met aan weerskanten een getoogd etalageraam. Deze vensters hebben aan boven- en onderkant ventilatiesleuven. Bij de panden 104 en 106 springt de kroonlijst bij de deur iets naar voren. Tussen de panden 106 en 108-110 bevindt zich een rijkbewerkte houten poortdeur. Bij het pand 108-110 loopt de kroonlijst verder recht door naar de dubbele paneeldeur geheel rechts. Deze vleugeldeuren zijn voorzien van smeedijzeren sierroosters, diamantkoppen, duwstangen en driehoekig tympaan. De woonverdieping hierboven heeft bij nummer 104 een door pilasters gelede borstwering met baksteenmozaïek, bij de andere huizen is deze vlak gemetseld. Alle woningen hebben T-vensters. Boven nummer 104 segmentbogen met baksteenmozaïek en hardstenen sluitsteen. Nummer 106 heeft boven de ramen een keperboog en pand 108-110 bezit getoogde spaarbogen. De fries is voorzien van baksteenmozaïek en een tandlijst. De geprofileerde kroonlijst wordt onderbroken door een dakkapel met T-venster met spaarboog zoals op de etage er onder. Het linker- en rechterpand hebben een dakkapel met trapgevel en overhoekse pinakel, de middelste heeft een keperboogvorm. Behalve de van een bakstenen omlijsting voorziene dakkapel heeft pand 108-110 aan weerskanten kleinere dakkapellen met plat dak en houten sieromlijsting. Achter nummer 108 bevindt zich een aanbouw met oorspronkelijk Art-Deco-interieur uit de bouwtijd.

Description
The two-storey block of dwellinghouses with shops has a mansard roof with slate tiles and is built of machine-made brick. Horizontal articulation is provided by a hard stone plinth, cordon strings and speckled courses. Through setbacks in the facade at the locations of gate passages there is an optical tripartite division of the block into two sections of three and one section of four window bays. The gate between 104 and 106 is bricked up. The left facade is half detached, a gate leads to the back courtyard. The shop frontages are executed in wood. The broad pilasters have decorative elements such as recessed fields, circles, bands, Flemish Renaissance motifs and diamond-headed studs under the profiled cornice. In the middle the double panel door with glass panels and cushions as shop entrance with at either side an arched display window. These windows have ventilation slits at top and bottom. At premises 104 and 106 the cornice springs forward slightly at the door. Between premises 106 and 108-110 is a richly worked wooden gate door. At premises 108-110 the cornice runs straight through to the double panel door at the far right. These swing doors are fitted with wrought-iron ornamental grilles, diamond-headed studs, push bars and triangular tympanum. The residential storey above has at number 104 a parapet articulated by pilasters with brick mosaic, at the other houses this is flush-pointed. All dwellings have T-windows. Above number 104 segmental arches with brick mosaic and hard stone keystone. Number 106 has above the windows a herringbone arch and premises 108-110 have arched relieving arches. The frieze is fitted with brick mosaic and a tooth ornament. The profiled cornice is interrupted by a roof dormer with T-window with relieving arch as on the storey below. The left and right premises have a roof dormer with stepped gable and diagonal finial, the middle one has a herringbone arch form. Apart from the roof dormer provided with a brick surround, premises 108-110 have at either side smaller roof dormers with flat roof and wooden ornamental surround. Behind number 108 is an extension with original Art Deco interior from the time of construction.
Valuation
The block of shop-dwellinghouses is of general interest. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of a socio-economic development, namely the growth of retail trade in an industrial city and is also of significance for the typological development of the shop-dwellinghouse. The block has architectural-historical value because of the style. The premises are important because of the integrity of the exterior, in particular the shop frontages.
