Inleiding

Introduction

The Eclectic TOWNHOUSE was built in 1894 for the wine merchant family H.J.M. Verbunt. It was later divided into two residential houses. The building forms part of an uninterrupted facade wall in the inner city.

Description

The two-storey building comprises seven bays and has a rectangular plan. On the gabled roof lie black cross tiles. The facades are constructed from red machine-made brick with hard stone elements such as speckled courses and worked keystones. The facade is articulated by corner pilasters and the risalits in which the entrance and gateway are located. The basement is of hard stone provided with cushions and diamond bosses, above which runs a continuous window sill beneath the arched sash windows. Far right is the high round-arched gateway and in the second bay from the left the entrance to number 38. The double wing doors with Neo-Renaissance moulding work, copper push bars and herringbone arch windows are placed beneath a worked calf and a round-arched fanlight. The high gateway has double doors with ornamental ironwork and is also provided with herringbone arch windows. Above both entrances is a vaulted balcony with vase-shaped balusters and hard stone lower and upper edges, resting on consoles provided with lion heads and acanthus leaves. The hard stone bands and vase-shaped balusters are repeated across the entire facade width as a French balcony beneath the arched T-windows of this storey. Opening doors with arched fanlight emerge onto both balconies: that above the gateway has a stained glass window. Above this is a facade stone with band and roll moulding on which "Anno 1894" is inscribed.

The gateway bay is executed higher with a brick stepped gable that breaks through the cornice. The corniced cornice rests on knobs and richly worked consoles along the frieze with ornamental brickwork and a dentil moulding. The stepped gable with transverse gabled roof has a round-arched T-window with keystone and a diagonal pinacle as its crown.

In the gateway on the left are double wing doors in Neo-Renaissance style with a Neo-Classical fanlight beside which are two rear-pane sash windows. The ceiling of the gateway is clad with reed mats from approximately 1970. Behind this perpendicular to the front building is a single-storey extension under a gabled roof from the building period, in which the kitchen is located with two six-pane sash windows. Above the gateway and further in the facade are arched six-pane sash windows. On the ground floor a conservatory with flat roof has been built. This white-painted wooden conservatory has pilasters with Corinthian capitals and scroll consoles beneath the gutter moulding. The yard is walled.

The interior is richly detailed. Via the entrance in the gateway one enters the vestibule with a wainscot of marbled stucco and a marble floor. The passageway doors are provided with glass-in-copper with circle-segment motifs and stylised floral decoration in muslin glass. The first front room on the left has a marble chimney piece in white and greenish-yellow marble with Tuscan columns, triglyphs and metopes. The stucco ceiling has among others a rosette with cherubs carrying swags. The front room has a marble chimney piece and heavily ornamented stucco ceilings with rosettes and broad decorative borders. Adjoining this is the conservatory with polychrome cement tiles with geometric design and two light domes, which are finished with muslin glass depicting a vase with a flower swag. The bordered staircase with wooden handrail has cast-iron ornamental balusters and leads to the landing, onto which various rooms open. These have Jugendstil stencilled paintings on the ceilings, executed in muted tones. The front room with stepped gable was in use as a study room and has an appropriately placed stained glass window with a little owl, an inkwell and an hourglass. On this storey is also a stained glass leaded light window with floral pattern along the edge for lighting. The very high attic storey has a boxed roof truss structure where two rooms are housed. The building has two cellars, one of which is older than the house.

Valuation

The building is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of social-economic development, namely the flourishing of industry and the construction of manufacturer's residences within the old urban structure; it is also of importance for the typological development of the manufacturer's house. From an architectural history perspective it is important because of the style and ornamental work as well as the use of materials. The complex is important because of the high degree of integrity of the exterior and interior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment.
