Inleiding

Het Eclecticistische HERENHUIS werd in 1901 gebouwd voor A.H.H. Kerstens.

Introduction

The Eclectic TOWNHOUSE was built in 1901 for A.H.H. Kerstens. He was one of the partners of the cashiers' firm Kerstens and De Charro. As of 1999 a florist is established on the ground floor, whereby the interior was preserved. The building forms part of an unbroken facade wall in the city centre.

Description

The two-storey building has four bays and a rectangular floor plan. The truncated mansard roof has roof boards covered with slate. The facades are built in machine-made brick. The front facade is a pilaster facade with a risalit on the left, divided horizontally by a wide string course. The basement is of hard stone; beneath the windows are diamond carvings and at the pilasters cushions. The round-arched sash windows have decorated relieving lintels and carved keystones. The double glazed folding doors are provided with rich woodcarving, brass door furniture and panes with wrought-iron grilles. The fanlight with keystone, in which the letters A K are incorporated, is shaped like a basket arch. Above the door is a hard stone balcony on carved brackets of the same material, from which open doors with arched fanlight give access. The lightly vaulted balustrade of the balcony has a palmette motif between arabesques. This motif recurs below the arched T-windows on the floor above. The straight keystone above the windows forms the start of two round arches above each window. The moulded drip moulding is supported by brackets carved with lion heads and acanthus leaves. At the windows there are fields with brick mosaic; in the risalit in place of this there is a cartouche with band and scroll work in which "Anno 1901" is indicated.

Three roof dormer windows with round-arched windows and a curved pediment have been inserted in the roof.

Behind the front door is a vestibule with white marble flooring and wainscoting. On the walls and ceilings of this room and in the former living quarters ornate Neo-Renaissance stucco work has been lavishly applied. In addition to real marble, marble painting has also been used. The front room has a herringbone parquet and a marble fireplace with tiled back wall. The back room with a wooden fireplace, and the conservatory are provided with polychrome cement tiles. The various single and double panel doors on the ground floor are provided with glass panes with ornamental muslin glass. Some doors are executed in walnut.

Valuation

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a socio-economic development, namely the prosperity of industry and the establishment of manufacturers' residences within the old urban structure; it is also of importance for the typological development of the manufacturers' dwelling. From an architectural-historical perspective, it is important because of its style and very rich and carefully executed ornament, as well as the use of materials also in the interior. The complex is important because of the great degree of integrity of the exterior and interior and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment.
