Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The DOUBLE DWELLING was built around 1920 in austere Expressionist style. The building forms part of a row of dwellings in a garden-village-like neighbourhood near the city centre of Tilburg. Around 1980 various window divisions were simplified.
Description
The building has a rectangular floor plan with a bent hipped roof covered with red improved Dutch tiles. The facades are built up in machine brick with decorative bonding patterns. The front facade has a tripartite division, in which the higher and more prominently projecting middle section is accentuated. The massive vertically oriented brick elements here form a counterweight through dark vertical brick strips to the horizontal elements of the wooden overhangs and broad wooden gutters. The axis of symmetry is broken on the right by an extra entrance to the rear passage. The middle section is entirely built in header bond. It has two broad projecting blocks at the corners. On the left is a narrow corner window placed with beneath the wooden overhang on the inside small tall flap windows at the corners. Above this overhang is a series of six small square window panes with blocks of frosted glass, above which a second wooden overhang. This projection forms a porch in which the worked wooden panelled doors with lancet windows are placed. The middle risalit distinguishes itself further from the side sections in that its sides are executed in darker brick. On the upper floor is a bay window with a chamfered and a straight side. Between the two windows in the middle a wooden panel with decorative blocks. Below it a wooden flower box; above the windows an overhang above which two fanlights follow. The flower box and the overhang follow the form of the bay window. The risalit rises high and is crowned by two brick corner pilasters. At the front four small square window panes are screened by a very far projecting wooden overhang.
Between the windows three diagonally built pilasters above recessed light-red lines. In both side sections is a bay window with a wooden overhang, above which a fanlight. On the right this overhang, which is hung from a tie rod with ornamental metalwork in circular forms, runs through above the gate entrance. In it is a wooden panelled door with ladder windows. This right bay is further emphasized by two tall vertical window strips. These are closed off by part of the gutter, on two projecting consoles. This gutter section is positioned lower. The side sections have on the first floor two casement windows with continuous tiled sill and a shared wooden overhang. High above this the facade is closed off by a wooden guttering channel. The front garden is enclosed by a brick wall in header bond with horizontal gravel-concrete inlay.
Valuation
The double dwelling is of general importance. It is of cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, as an example of the influence of the garden city movement in the expansion of the city in the interwar period, it is of importance for the typological development of the middle-class dwelling.
Architecturally it is valuable because of the style and ornamentation as a regional variant of Expressionism. The building has ensemble value as part of a large neighbourhood from the interwar period. It is important because of the integrity of its exterior, also in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment.
