Inleiding
Voormalige POLITIEPOST annex BRANDSPUITHUIS uit 1909, naar ontwerp van het Gemeentelijk bedrijf Publieke Werken Tilburg. Gebouwd als politiewachtpost gelegen op de hoek van het Besterdplein en Hoefakkerstraat. Op het plein, liggend in de woonwijk de Besterd, vond de weekmarkt voor het noordelijk stadsdeel plaats, vermoedelijk de reden waarom juist hier behoefte was aan een politiepost. In 1977 is het pand verbouwd tot woonhuis.
Omschrijving
Eenlaags huis onder samengesteld zadeldak belegd met Tuile du Nord-pannen. L-vormige plattegrond. Voor- en zijgevel zijn symmetrisch van opzet en drie traveeën breed. Het opgaande werk bestaat uit een hardstenen plint met hierop een rode machinale baksteen gemetseld in kruisverband, een eenvoudige fries gevormd door een gele baksteen en een houten bakgoot op gootklossen. De muuropeningen zijn aan de bovenkant recht afgesloten en voorzien van een gemetselde segmentboog met een natuurstenen aanzet- en sluitsteen. De aanzetsteen heeft bovendien een afgeronde hoek. In de voorgevel een risalerend rondboogportaal met in de pilasters speklagen waarin een dubbele paneelvoordeur met bovenlicht, eveneens met rondboog. De zwikken van de boog en speklagen zijn van Franse kalksteen. In de zwik beeldhouwwerk van onder meer florale motieven en de wapens van de stad. In voor- en zijgevel kruisvensters met in de bovenlichten geel kathedraalglas in een achtruits roedenverdeling. Symmetrisch in voor- en zijgevel is in het dakvlak een dakkapel opgenomen met een gehoogd dakvlak. Op de nok van het dak bevindt zich een klokkentorentje met oorspronkelijk een luidklokje, voorzien van een cordonlijstje met aan alle zijden een oeil de boeuf en bekroond met een ui-vormige afdekking met siersmeedwerk en windwijzer.
Waardering
De voormalige politiepost annex brandspuithuis is van algemeen belang. Het pand heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische en bestuurlijke ontwikkeling van de stad en is tevens van belang in de typologische ontwikkeling van de politiebureaus. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en is tevens van belang als voorbeeld van de architectuuropvatting binnen de gemeentelijke afdelingen. Het is uitwendig gaaf bewaard gebleven.

Former POLICE POST annex FIRE ENGINE HOUSE from 1909, designed by the Municipal Department of Public Works Tilburg. Built as a police watch post situated at the corner of Besterdplein and Hoefakkerstraat. On the square, lying in the residential district de Besterd, the weekly market for the northern part of the city took place, presumably the reason why a police post was needed here. In 1977 the building was converted into a residential house.
Description
Single-storey house under composite gabled roof covered with Tuile du Nord tiles. L-shaped floor plan. Front and side facades are symmetrical in design and three bays wide. The wall structure consists of a hard stone plinth with upon it red machine-made bricks laid in cross bond, a simple frieze formed by yellow brick and a wooden gutter on gutter brackets. The wall openings are straight at the top and provided with a moulded segmental arch with natural stone springer and keystone. The springer stone moreover has a rounded corner. In the front facade a projecting round-arched portal with in the pilasters speckled courses in which a double panelled front door with fanlight, likewise with round arch. The corners of the arch and speckled courses are of French limestone. In the arch stonework of among others floral motifs and the coat of arms of the city. In front and side facade cross windows with in the fanlights yellow cathedral glass in an eight-pane glazing bar division. Symmetrically in front and side facade a roof dormer is incorporated with a raised roof plane. On the ridge of the roof is a small bell tower with originally a small bell, provided with a cordon moulding with on all sides an oeil de boeuf and crowned with an onion-shaped covering with decorative ironwork and weathervane.
Valuation
The former police post annex fire engine house is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical significance as a distinctive expression of the socio-economic and administrative development of the city and is furthermore significant in the typological development of police stations. It has architectural-historical significance because of the qualities of the design and is furthermore significant as an example of the architectural conception within the municipal departments. It has been preserved intact in its exterior appearance.
