Inleiding

Introduction

The PARSONAGE of the R.C. Antonius van Padua Church was likewise built in 1911-1913 to the design of architect A. Margry in a sober manner with motifs from the Transition style. The associated church is one of the first that Margry built by commission of Rotterdam shipping magnate J. Grewen in the 's-Hertogenbosch diocese. The building is situated to the left of the church on an oval square, onto which various streets open.

Description

The parsonage is constructed of dark red machine-made brick with decorative courses and ornamental motifs in yellow brick. The two-storey block-shaped house has a half-hipped roof with simple roof dormers, covered with slate in plain lap and is connected to the church by a single-storey extension with entrance.

The gables have a brick plinth with stone drip moulding and double decorative courses in yellow stone. Below the simple moulded cornice runs a two-colour brick frieze with decorative brickwork in cassettes. The gables have on the ground floor sash windows with fanlights with small glazing bars and cathedral glass under stone lintels. On the upper storey identical windows, but here under segmental arches in brick. The front gable has slightly richer detailing and asymmetrical composition with on the left side a projecting risalit with spout gable with stone cornice and ornamental balls at the base. The gable is crowned by an ornamental motif with cross in circle. In the risalit a five-sided bay with sash windows, moulded cornice and wooden balcony railing. On the upper storey here a three-part window and door opening under segmental arch. To the right of the risalit the entrance bay with panelled door and at the height of the eaves a brick ornamental balustrade with ball-shaped ornamental element. To the right of the entrance identical windows as in the other gables. On the rear side a conservatory with flat roof and leaded glass windows. The connecting structure with the church has a two-part sash window under lintel and a Flemish gable with round window.

The interior is extremely simple and possesses among other things stuccoed ceilings, tiled floors and panelled doors from the period of construction.

Valuation

The parsonage is of general importance. The building represents cultural-historical importance as an example of spiritual and socio-economic development, in particular the construction of new churches after 1900 in the old pattern of roads and streets; it is moreover of importance as an example of the way in which ecclesiastical architecture in the 's-Hertogenbosch diocese received an important impetus through private patronage. The building is of architectural-historical importance because of the style and the place in the work of the architect. The property has special significance because of its situating, connected with the development of the city. The complex is valuable because of the integrity of its interior and exterior and as such extremely rare.
