Inleiding
Het Jugendstil CAFE met BOVENWONING werd in 1908 gebouwd voor J. van Eijndhoven naar ontwerp van architect Jos Donders. Het interieur van het café is bij verbouwingen rond 1970 gewijzigd.
Omschrijving
Het afgeschuinde hoekpand heeft drie bouwlagen aan de zijde van de Heuvelring en twee bouwlagen op de hoek van de Veemarktstraat. Het dak is plat met schild aan de zijde van de Veemarktstraat, waarop leien in Maasdekking. De gevels zijn opgetrokken uit witte verblendsteen met rode voegen. Plint, dorpels en aanzetstenen zijn van hardsteen. Speklagen en bogen zijn uitgevoerd in bricornasteen. De gevel aan de zijde van de Heuvelring telt twee vensterassen op de begane grond en de etage. De getoogde bovenlichten op de begane grond zijn gedeeld. De stolpvensters van de etage hebben getoogde bovenlichten met sierroedenverdeling. De bovenste etage bevat drie rondboogvensters met verticale roedenverdeling. Tenslotte een rondboogfries met uitkragende houten gootlijst op kwartronde schoren. De hoek met toegangsdeur is afgeschuind. Op consoles hierboven een rechthoekige houten erker met deels vereenvoudigde vensterindeling met gebogen roeden. Op de erker een balkon met smeedijzeren hekwerk. Balkondeuren en zijramen liggen iets terug in de gevel. Dit geveldeel wordt bekroond door lisenen met een deels met gele baksteen gevulde, deels opengewerkte bakstenen balustrade. De hoekstukken eindigen in piramidevormige blokken. Aansluitend op de hoek loopt de gevel aan de Veemarktstraat schuin af boven één van de drie traveeën. De vensters van beide etages komen overeen met die aan de Heuvelring. Boven de twee linkervensters een licht uitkragende houten gootlijst op gesneden houten klossen. Het schuin lopende geveldeel hiernaast wordt geaccentueerd door een hardstenen lijst met hieronder getrapt klimmende blokken. Verder een klimmend rondboogfries en lisenen met decoratieve bekroningen.
Waardering
Het pand is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de opbloei van de horeca rond de eeuwwisseling. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de toepassing van een regionale variant van de Art Nouveau en als voorbeeld van het werk van de architect Donders. Het gebouw is belangrijk vanwege de gaafheid van het exterieur en in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving.

The chamfered corner building has three storeys on the side of Heuvelring and two storeys at the corner of Veemarktstraat. The roof is flat with hipped section on the side of Veemarktstraat, covered with slates in Maas pattern. The facades are built up in white face brick with red mortar joints. Plinth, sills and quoins are of hardstone. Decorative bands and arches are executed in brick stone. The facade on the side of Heuvelring has two window axes on the ground floor and first floor. The arched fanlights on the ground floor are divided. The sash windows of the first floor have arched fanlights with ornamental glazing bar division. The upper storey contains three round-arch windows with vertical glazing bars. Finally a round-arch frieze with projecting wooden cornice on quarter-round brackets. The corner with entrance door is chamfered. On consoles above this a rectangular wooden bay window with partly simplified glazing bar division with curved bars. On the bay window a balcony with wrought-iron railings. Balcony doors and side windows are set slightly back in the facade. This facade section is crowned by pilaster strips with a partly filled with yellow brick, partly open wrought-brick balustrade. The corner pieces end in pyramid-shaped blocks. Adjoining the corner the facade on Veemarktstraat slopes obliquely above one of the three bays. The windows of both storeys correspond to those on Heuvelring. Above the two left windows a slightly projecting wooden cornice on carved wooden blocks. The obliquely sloping facade section next to this is accentuated by a hardstone moulding with stepped climbing blocks below it. Further a climbing round-arch frieze and pilaster strips with decorative crownings.
Valuation
The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of socio-economic development, in particular the flourishing of the catering trade around the turn of the century. It has architectural-historical importance because of the application of a regional variant of Art Nouveau and as an example of the work of architect Donders.
