The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

The GATEHOUSE of the former R.C. CONVENT Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours, now called "De Rendierhoeve", was built shortly after 1903 by abbot Verbruggen of the nearby abbey Koningshoeven in Neo-Gothic style.

Description

The gatehouse has a rectangular floor plan and comprises one and two storeys. The building has a symmetrical composition with in the centre the vaulted carriage passage, above which a second storey under a gabled roof with eternit slate in diagonal laid covering. The gate is flanked by two single-storey annexes under flat roofs. The brick facades are provided with cemented bands and corner mouldings and are finished with a brick frieze with tooth mouldings and a profiled wooden cornice. In both single-storey sections the street facades are provided with pointed-arch windows, partly with renewed eight or twelve-pane glazing bars. On the upper floor two pointed-arch windows with in the fanlight the original iron fork tracery. The capping gable has a pointed-arch niche and is finished with a bedding moulding with a ridge tile with finial. Against the northern and southern facade a shallow projection under a flat roof. In the portal of the gate a cast-iron door bell. On either side of the hinged gate a door gives access to the adjacent service dwellings. The portal can be closed on the street side with a high wrought-iron railing.

Valuation

The gatehouse is part of a complex of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism, in particular the housing of persecuted religious from elsewhere as a result of the Combes laws; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the enclosed convent for female religious. It has architectural-historical values because of the restrained, gothicising vocabulary of forms employed. It has ensemble values due to the high quality of the built heritage and the historical-spatial relationship with the nearby convent Koningshoeven. It is of importance because of the typological and functional rarity of an enclosed convent from around 1900.
