Inleiding

Introduction

The MAIN BUILDING of the former R.C. CONVENT Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours, now called "De Rendierhoeve", was built shortly after 1903 by abbot Verbruggen of the nearby abbey Koningshoeven in Neo-Gothic style.

Description

The MAIN BUILDING is oriented north-south in line with the gatehouse and has an elongated rectangular floor plan. It comprises two storeys and is provided with composite gabled roofs, covered with crossed tiles. It has brick chimneys. On the southern side stands an original single-storey annex, L-shaped in floor plan, with a gabled roof between stepped gables. On the eastern roof slope a brick chimney. The building originally housed all the important convent functions: refectory, dormitory and (still clearly recognisable) convent chapel. The facades are constructed in brick, provided with pressed stone bands and are finished with a frieze of decorative brickwork, provided with tooth and mouse-tooth mouldings. In the facades low pointed-arch lancet windows, provided with eyebrow mouldings. On the roof slopes Neo-Gothic roof dormers executed in wood and zinc.

Valuation

The main building forms part of a complex of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism, in particular the housing of persecuted religious from elsewhere as a result of the Combes laws; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the enclosed convent for female religious. It has architectural-historical values because of the restrained, gothicising vocabulary of forms employed. It has ensemble values due to the high quality of the built heritage and the historical-spatial relationship with the nearby convent Koningshoeven. It is of importance because of the typological and functional rarity of an enclosed convent from around 1900.
