Inleiding

Introduction

The BLOCK of five DWELLINGS WITH SMITHY was built in 1917 at the behest of Mr Van Beurden as a combination of his own smithy with rental housing. Around 1980 the dwellings were internally renovated and provided with a roof dormer.

Description

The single-storey block has a rectangular floor plan and a mansard roof with a front board covered with slates in Dutch bond with decorative patterns and above it black pantiles. The facades are constructed from machine-made brickwork with a plastered plinth and curled wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. Horizontal articulation is achieved through decorative treatment of the plastered spandrels, the ornamental band under the ashlar window sills and in the frieze. The windows and doors alternate rhythmically. Each building has a window and a door, but number 13 has two windows with the front door placed between them. The tall panelled doors of the dwellings are fitted with panel cushions, brass letter-boxes, push bars and bell pulls. Like the sash windows, the doors have a four-paned fanlight with green glass. Above this a lintel with circle-stripe decoration, a segmental arch of yellow brickwork with red brick infill. The corner house at number 13 has a chamfered corner with a small stepped gable. The smithy has double wooden doors with diagonal decorative panels and windows with small glazing bars, under a steel lintel with rosettes and Jugendstil decoration at the corners. Above this the inscription: "Metalworking J.C. van Beurden & Son." The narrow windows on either side have an undivided fanlight. The gutter rail rests on carved wooden blocks. The smithy retains the original roof dormer with three-paned fanlight under a lean-to roof. The other buildings have a larger roof dormer under a flat roof. The right side gable has three windows on the ground floor under segmental arches, between straight brick bonds. Above this a hoist door; the iron hoist beam has recently disappeared. In the ridge an iron round window with four-foil tracery. The left side gable is blank.

The rear facades are dominated by three large extensions. At the smithy this is an extension under a gabled roof with newly improved Dutch pantiles. Behind the dwellings these are, coupled in pairs, an extension under a gabled roof with black pantiles. These date from the time of construction in contrast to the large roof dormers which extend across the entire width of the roof.

The interior of the dwellings has been completely renovated. The smithy still retains virtually the entire original furnishings and layout including, among other things, a smithy forge with iron chimney-piece. On the floor are end-grain wooden blocks in a weaving pattern.

Valuation

The block of dwellings with smithy is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as an example of a socio-economic development, namely the growth of industry, and is also of importance as an example of the typological development of dwellings with workshop. The group is architecturally-historically important because of the intactness of the exterior and partly of the interior. As a whole it is important because of typological and functional rarity.
