Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Omschrijving.
Beide onderdelen in eenvoudige uitvoering.

Description
Introduction.
LANDSCAPE GARDEN "Mariënhof" designed in 1917 by L.A. Springer (Haarlem) and laid out in 1919. The other components of the complex are: villa (I) and the tea house (III). The garden, originally approximately 2.5 hectares in size, was laid out for the industrialist family Jos Janssen-Verhulst. In 1919 this villa lay relatively isolated on the Bredaseweg. Only in 1930 did a continuous ribbon of villas with large gardens emerge on the Bredaseweg. Around 1970 a first major intervention in the garden took place. At the rear of the garden approximately 15% of the plot area was sold for the construction of a residential district. The kitchen garden, orchard, garage and gardener's house disappeared as a result. The remaining strip, formerly kitchen garden and orchard, was planted with larch, Douglas fir and swamp cypress. The path system at the rear of the garden was adapted. A new garage was built. The current area of the garden is approximately 1.8 hectares. In 1980 the tennis court also disappeared and was planted with various deciduous trees. The garage fell outside the protection.
Description.
"Mariënhof" is a medium-sized villa garden in the readily recognizable Springer style. Both driveways to the villa are closed off from the street by a white-painted wooden double gate hanging between square masonry pillars of brickwork topped with a natural stone slab. Both elements in simple execution. On the gates in black paint the name of the villa. The path system has a 'crinkle-crankle pattern' with a flowing course and is simple and logical in layout. At the three-way junctions of the path system planting in triangular form. The front area is accessed by an entrance and exit drive along the front of the villa, within which a large lawn is situated. To make the circuit walk behind the house as large as possible, the ornamental garden section is positioned with a diagonal axis between the utility gardens, with paths that curve close to the outer boundaries of the garden. The disappeared utility gardens, namely the combination of kitchen garden, orchard and tennis court were not laid out in the landscape style, but these were screened by planting and had their own design. The sight lines from the villa, characteristic of the landscape style are directed in a southerly direction over the then open farmland and in a westerly direction towards a wooded area that merged into the Oude Warande. Within the garden there are no sight lines in the design. With regard to planting, grass, trees and shrubs are the main motif. The range of plants used speaks to great dendrological knowledge. Springer chose a large variety in leaf shape and colour, inflorescence and fruits. In the planting plan few specimens of one species were used, planting was done singly or in groups of two, three or five, with the exception of woodland planting and hedges. The shrub compartments display a so-called 'convex' structure, that is to say that the planting rises from low to high with a group of upright trees and shrubs in the centre of the shrub compartment. In front of the main entrance to the villa on the edge of the driveway there is a simple metal sundial on a natural stone slab. The sundial bears the inscription: "me sol-vos regnat ombres".
Valuation.
The garden is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as a remarkable expression of a cultural and socio-economic development, in particular the establishment of country estates on the outskirts of the industrial city. The garden has architectural-historical values; it is of importance for the history of garden architecture and of particular importance in the oeuvre of L.A. Springer. The garden has ensemble values in connection with the entire complex.
