Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
A WATER TOWER dating from 1914-1915, situated on the south-east side of the Dokweg and near the Vissershaven. The water tower was built on behalf of the State as a replacement for a simple wooden tower from 1901. The new construction was necessary because the strong expansion of the harbours exploited by the State Fisheries Harbour Company (SVHB) made a new water mains system necessary. This expansion consisted among other things of the extension of the Vissershaven dug in 1896, the construction of a new State fish auction, and the development of a new harbour, the Haringhaven. In 1954 the municipality took over the water supply from the SVHB. The reservoir cladding was sprayed with concrete in 1953 due to the poor condition of the masonry.
Description
The water tower, 24.50 m high, has an octagonal open substructure, consisting of a construction of eight reinforced concrete pillars around a central pipe column, on which rests a cantilevered reservoir cladding with a circular cross-section and a flat roof. In the substructure the eight pillars are connected horizontally to each other at four levels by coupling beams of reinforced concrete. Just above the lowest coupling beams the pillars, which taper slightly inward, have on the outside a drainage-directing chamfer. The space between the pillars is closed off up to these coupling beams installed at approximately three metres height. Here the service rooms are situated, accessible via a bolted door in the north-east and south walls. The north-west wall is provided with a four-pane window; in the remaining facades there is a two-pane horizontal window. The uppermost part of the substructure, reached via iron step ladders, where the leak floor is located, is also closed off and built forward on the east side. In the middle of each side is a four-pane hopper window (some are missing). The eight pillars continue along this section and the reservoir cladding. The intermediate wall surfaces of the latter are not executed in concrete, but are laid in red machine-made Flemish bond in cross bond. In the middle of each of these wall surfaces is a narrow four-pane window and at the top a small square window. The concrete parts of the water tower are finished with a layer of fine gravel. The cylindrical high-level reservoir is provided with a flat base and executed in reinforced concrete. The reservoir has a diameter of 11.25 m and a capacity of 600 cubic metres.
Valuation
The water tower of 1914-'15 is of general importance due to its architectural, cultural-historical and typological value as an early and well-preserved example of a water tower executed in reinforced concrete skeleton construction with the structure left exposed. The building also has situational value due to its image-defining and historically-functional location at the harbour of IJmuiden.
