Inleiding
Als laatste fase van de samenhangende reeks kloosteruitbreidingen aan de zuidzijde van de Abdijstraat, werd in 1934 deze POORT met BRUG aangelegd naar ontwerp van de architect H.W. Valk in Traditionalistische stijl. De brug is aangelegd over de gracht aan de zuidzijde van het abdijterrein. Het geheel is, blijkens een medaillon aan de achterzijde, aangeboden bij het 800-jarig bestaan van de abdij op 3 augustus 1934 door het feestcomité van Heeswijk onder voorzitterschap van de toenmalige burgemeester G. Wagenaar.
Omschrijving
De poort met brug is opgetrokken in schoon metselwerk in kettingverband met een voor deze fase van het werk van H.W. Valk typerende handvorm baksteen met het formaat van oude kloostermoppen. De eigenlijke brug heeft aan de zijkanten gemetselde muren van circa 1.50 meter hoogte en een rollaag aan de bovenzijde. De muren zwenken aan de uiteinden iets naar buiten uit. Ook aan de achterzijde van de poort zijn dergelijke uitzwenkende muurtjes geplaatst, zij het dat deze korter zijn. De feitelijke overspanning van de gracht is geornamenteerd met drie gemetselde rondstaven in profielsteen. Het wegdek is met klinkers bestraat. De eigenlijke poort, die zich al op het abdijterrein bevindt, is een circa vijf meter hoge overspanning met een gedrukte boog en met een hoger opgaand centraal gedeelte dat middels een met Hollandse pannen gedekte ezelsrug bekroond wordt. Dit centrale gedeelte is geornamenteerd met drie rondbogige beeldnissen met afzaat; in de centrale nis is een kalkstenen beeld van Norbertus geplaatst. In de penanten van de poorten zijn, boven de tufstenen aanzetstenen, twee gepolychromeerde ronde medaillons aangebracht met daarin de wapens van de abdij en van de gemeente Heeswijk. Het metselwerk van de met Hollandse pannen gedekte afzaten is geornamenteerd met vlechtingen. De penanten zijn aan de voet voorzien van deels in het metselwerk verzonken ronde tufstenen schamppalen. Een opvallend detail zijn de voor de penanten aangebrachte halfronde nissen waarvan de westelijke een met Hollandse pannen gedekt houten afdakje heeft. De laatste nis diende om de mogelijkheid tot schuilen te bieden tot de poort geopend kon worden. De poortdeur is om verkeerstechnische redenen verwijderd. De ijzeren duimen zijn nog zichtbaar. Aan de noordzijde is de poort identiek gedetailleerd als aan de zuidzijde. Aan de westzijde is hier een rond medaillon met de aanbiedingsopdracht geplaatst.
Waardering
De poort met brug is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de explosieve groei van het katholieke kloosterleven na het herstel van de bisschoppelijke hiërarchie in 1853.
Het object heeft architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de hoge architectonische kwaliteit en de verzorgde detaillering die het bezit. Tevens is het van architectuurhistorisch belang vanwege de plaats die het inneemt binnen het werk van de architect H.W. Valk als representant van de traditionalistische fase hierin, die tot uidrukking komen in het materiaalgebruik. Introduction
As the final phase of the coherent sequence of cloister extensions on the south side of the Abdijstraat, this GATE with BRIDGE was constructed in 1934 according to the design of architect H.W. Valk in Traditionalist style. The bridge was constructed over the moat on the south side of the abbey grounds. The whole was, as evidenced by a medallion on the rear side, presented on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the abbey on 3 August 1934 by the anniversary committee of Heeswijk under the chairmanship of the then mayor G. Wagenaar.
Description
The gate with bridge is constructed in fair-faced brickwork in chain bond with a handmade brick form typical for this phase of H.W. Valk's work, with the dimensions of old cloister moppets. The actual bridge has masonry walls on the sides of approximately 1.50 metres in height and a roll course on the top. The walls curve slightly outward at the ends. Similar outward-curving walls are also placed on the rear side of the gate, though these are shorter. The actual spanning of the moat is ornamented with three masonry round mouldings in ashlar stone. The deck is paved with clinker bricks. The actual gate, which is already located on the abbey grounds, is an approximately five-metre high span with a depressed arch and with a higher rising central section which is crowned by means of a roof covered with Dutch tiles in the form of a ridge tile. This central section is ornamented with three round-arched image niches with eaves; in the central niche a limestone sculpture of Norbertus is placed. In the pilasters of the gates are, above the tufa stone setting stones, two polychromatic round medallions with therein the coats of arms of the abbey and of the municipality of Heeswijk. The brickwork of the eaves covered with Dutch tiles is ornamented with interlacing. The pilasters are provided at the base with partly recessed round tufa stone chamfered bollards. A striking detail are the semi-circular niches attached in front of the pilasters, of which the western one has a wooden roof covered with Dutch tiles. The last niche served to offer the possibility of shelter until the gate could be opened. The gate door has been removed for traffic reasons. The iron thumb bolts are still visible. On the north side the gate is detailed identically as on the south side. On the west side a round medallion with the presentation inscription is placed here.
Assessment
The gate with bridge is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the explosive growth of Catholic cloister life after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.
