Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
U-shaped MONASTERY BUILDING, erected between 1869-1870 in the forms of Neo-Gothic architecture according to a design by architect Th. Asseler. The monastery building consists of three wings of a square, of which the eastern wing actually only serves the function of a passageway. This section is the second expansion, following the monastery building of 1857-1858, of the rapidly growing abbey community and is situated between the "small castle or playhouse" dating from 1546 and the wing on the east side from 1857-1858. In this wing, which is oriented north-south, there are among other things reception areas, a kitchen with refectory and accommodation for guests. This section underwent major renovation in 1999. On the north side a new residence for the monks was built in 1998/9 to replace a building from 1927 and 1966. The northern wing of the U-shape dates from 1870 and comprised among other things a library which has now been relocated to the new section.
Description
Elongated monastery building and partly vaulted section of two storeys with a roof space storey on rectangular plan under a gabled roof covered with Meuse slate with corner jacks at the front. The façades are constructed in machine-made brick laid in English bond. The plinth is cemented. The façade is symmetrical in design and has on the corners two risalits with stepped gables in which are placed stepped triangular fields topped with a pointed arch within which an oculus is set. The stepped gables furthermore have a saddle back and projections at the base. At the height of the attic beam layer ornamental wrought-iron wall anchors are provided. The frieze is decorated both on the front and on the side façades with strips of ornamental brickwork including among others sawtooth and mouse-tooth mouldings. In the front roof section there is a small roof dormer. The windows on the ground floor and the storey are topped with a segmental arch, have wooden cross windows, 24-pane sashes and hardstone sills. Above a low hardstone staircase of three steps there is an entrance framed with stucco and topped with a segmental arch, with a double clasped door with ornamental iron fittings, a fanlight with glazing bars in web pattern and a glass canopy. Centrally in the middle risalit there is a natural stone commemorative stone with coat of arms and inscription, of A. van Laarhoven, abbot from 1867-1870. Lower right above the plinth there is a small natural stone with an inscription commemorating the laying of the foundation stone. The western side façade has seven bays. The windows are placed one above the other and have the same detailing as those on the front. The inner courtyard served as a burial ground until approximately 1966. The northern wing was erected a year after the western wing and is virtually identical to the western wing in the detailing of windows, sashes and roof dormers. Somewhat later than this wing the single-storey eastern section was erected. This section partly borders on the abbey church (part IV) and is also internally connected with it. The rooms in this wing show less coherence than the western and northern wings. In this section are several rooms with an administrative function. The detailing of windows, sashes and roof dormers is in accordance with that of the western and northern wings. Internally there are on the front (south side) a reception area and a hall. On the ground floor of the elongated western wing the kitchen and refectory are furthermore located. On the east side there is here a large continuous corridor. The storey, renovated in 1999, serves as accommodation for guests. Internally the whole is connected with the "small castle" and with the eastern wing (part III). On the north side it is connected with the newly built residences for the monks.
Valuation.
The monastery building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical values as a particular expression of the explosive growth of Catholic monastic life after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853 and as part of the abbey. It has architectural-historical importance on account of the Neo-Gothic building style and on account of the high architectural quality.
Moreover, in connection with the other complex components it has architectural-historical value as a particular expression of the search for a typology for the monastery building in general. In particular the transition from a more mansion-like character to the more usual monastery typology is of importance.
It has ensemble values with the other complex components. It is of importance on account of its well-preserved character and on account of its typological and functional rarity. It has situational value on account of its location in the park.
