Inleiding
Winkelpand met bovenwoningen gesitueerd in de gesloten straatwand aan de westzijde van de Steenweg. Het pand werd gebouwd in 1935 naar een ontwerp van architect Jan Bongaerts. De toegepaste bouwstijl is traditionalistisch.
Omschrijving
WINKELPAND MET BOVENWONINGEN. Het pand telt vier bouwlagen en wordt afgedekt met een zadeldak met pannen. In de eerste bouwlaag vier moderne winkelpuien. Overige bouwlagen in gele baksteen met metselwerk in kettingverband. Rechthoekige houten en stalen vensters en bovenlichten deels met glas-in-lood.
Symmetrische gevelindeling. In de eerste bouwlaag vier moderne winkelpuien. Middendeel voorgevel vanaf de tweede bouwlaag iets vooruitspringend. Beide hoekdelen iets hoger doorlopend. In de hoekdelen in elke bouwlaag een rechthoekig houten venster met in de derde bouwlaag een smeedijzeren vlaggestokhouder.
Middengeveldeel met in de tweede en derde bouwlaag een terugliggende horizontale reeks gelede vensters gescheiden door kleine gevelvlakken in zwart geglazuurde baksteen. Geglazuurde vensterdorpels. Bovenlichten in stalen kozijnen met doorlopende beton dorpel en latei. In de vierde bouwlaag een loggia over gehele breedte van vooruitspringend geveldeel. Breed dakoverstek. In de vierde bouwlaag in het middengeveldeel twee smeedijzeren vlaggestokhouders.
Aan de achtergevel een viertal uitbouwen in een, twee en drie bouwlagen met platte daken. Deze uitbouwen zijn voorzien van na-oorlogse aanbouwen.
Structuur van het INTERIEUR van de eerste bouwlaag is niet meer in tact; de structuur van het interieur van de overige bouwlagen is wel in tact hetgeen blijkt uit de situering van de gangen, trappenhuizen en kamers. Authentieke trappenhuizen.
Waardering
Het WINKELPAND MET BOVENWONINGEN bezit cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege het belang van het object als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van winkel met bovenwoningen rond het midden van de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het belang voor de geschiedenis van de bovenregionale architectuur en als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van architect Jan Bongaerts.
