Inleiding
Het WINKELWOONHUIS is gelegen op de hoek van de Steenweg en de Bergstraat in het centrum van Roermond. Het pand is gebouwd in XXb met invloeden van het Nieuwe Bouwen. Op de begane grond bevond zich oorspronkelijk het modehuis Chic van de familie Thomassen die er boven woonde. Momenteel zijn de eerste twee bouwlagen in gebruik als kledingzaken en een lunchroom en de derde als woning. Het winkel-woonhuis is ten behoeve van het gebruik een aantal malen gewijzingd. De vensters in de tweede laag hebben gekleurd glas-in-lood uit 1953 van Max Weiss en tonen de ontwikkeling van kleding vanaf de Oude Grieken tot ca 1940. Deze vensters benadrukken de oorspronkelijke funktie van het gebouw.
Omschrijving
Het WINKELWOONHUIS heeft een hoofdzakelijk rechthoekige plattegrond in drie bouwlagen onder een zadeldak met blauwe muldenpannen. De gevels hebben in de eerste bouwlaag een vernieuwde winkelpui met aan de Bergstraat de entree naar de bovenverdieping onder klein rond venster met glas-in-lood.
Het pand heeft verder een opstand van baksteen in kettingverband, aan de Bergstraat in drie en aan de Steenweg in vier traveeën. De gevelvlakken in de tweede en derde bouwlaag springen iets uit. Op de hoek van beide straten bevindt zich een halfronde erker met gebogen stalen kozijnen, waarvan kleinere in de derde laag. Boven de erker bevindt zich een half rond balkon met vijf relingen, waarachter een balkondeur in klein volume onder een halfrond afdak.
In de tweede laag van de gevels bevinden zich vensters tussen beton lateien en blauwe tegels in schuine lijst. Dit zijn houten kozijn met glas-in-lood en figuurglas met gekleurd glas-in-lood, onder een bovenlicht met gekleurd glas in staal, waarin een afbeelding in gekleurd glas-in-lood.
In de derde laag bevinden zich drie vensters boven een cordonlijst en over een luifelgoot.
De STRUCTUUR VAN HET INTERIEUR is in tact hetgeen blijkt uit de situering van gangen, trappenhuizen en overige ruimten.

De WINKELWONING Steenweg 2 te Roermond bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling binnen de architectuur van winkel-woonhuizen. Introduction
The SHOP-HOUSE is situated on the corner of the Steenweg and the Bergstraat in the centre of Roermond. The building was built in the second half of the 20th century with influences of the New Building movement. On the ground floor was originally the fashion house Chic of the Thomassen family who lived above it. Currently the first two storeys are in use as clothing shops and a lunchroom and the third as a residence. The shop-house has been altered several times for purposes of use. The windows on the second storey have coloured leaded glass from 1953 by Max Weiss and show the development of clothing from Ancient Greece to c. 1940. These windows emphasise the original function of the building.
Description
The SHOP-HOUSE has a mainly rectangular floor plan in three storeys under a gabled roof with blue curved-barrel tiles. The facades have on the first storey a renewed shop front with on the Bergstraat the entrance to the upper storey under a small round window with leaded glass.
The building further has a facade of brick in running bond, on the Bergstraat in three and on the Steenweg in four bays. The facade planes on the second and third storey project slightly. On the corner of both streets is a semicircular bay window with curved steel window frames, smaller ones on the third storey. Above the bay window is a semicircular balcony with five railings, behind which a balcony door in small volume under a semicircular shed roof.
On the second storey of the facades are windows between concrete lintels and blue tiles in slanted frame. These are wooden window frames with leaded glass and figured glass with coloured leaded glass, under a fanlight with coloured glass in steel, with an image in coloured leaded glass.
On the third storey are three windows above a string course and over a gutter strip.
The STRUCTURE OF THE INTERIOR is intact, as evidenced by the arrangement of corridors, staircases and other rooms.
