Inleiding

CAFÉ MET dubbele BOVENWONING is gelegen op de hoek van de Grote Kerkstraat en de gesloten straatwand aan de Markt in Roermond.

Het pand is gebouwd rond 1904 in Traditionele stijl met Jugendstil invloeden. Het pand is gebouwd op de mergelgewelven van de kelder van een voormalig pand, oorspronkelijk als pension en later onder meer in gebruik genomen als sigarenzaak, uitzendbureau, VVV en cafe. Op de bovengelegen verdiepingen wordt gewoond. Het interieur van de woning is in 1959 gedeeltelijk gewijzigd. Het interieur van de eerste bouwlaag is eveneens gewijzigd, onder meer in 1976 en 1978.

Omschrijving

Het CAFÉ met BOVENWONINGEN heeft een meervoudige plattegrond in drie bouwlagen onder samengestelde mansardedaken met diverse dakkapellen. De gevel heeft een optrek van rode baksteen in kruisverband met een hardstenen plint, gedeeltelijk gecementeerd. In de gevel bevinden zich rechthoekige houten deuren en vensters met bovenlicht van groen figuurglas met roedeverdeling, gedeeltelijk met raad-motief. Hardstenen dorpel en latei. De tweedelige vensters en het middelste deel van het driedelige venster zijn getoogd onder het bovenlicht. De vensters van de tweede bouwlaag bevinden zich in één segmentbooglijst met de vensters van de derde bouwlaag, waarin zich tevens een verdiepte borstwering en vulstuk bevinden.

Verder enkele en dubbele baksteen speklagen, ook boven de strek.

GEVEL aan de MARKTZIJDE bestaat uit twee traveeën. De rechter travee heeft in de eerste laag een dubbel kozijn met getoogd bovenlicht in een hardsteen omlijsting. Twee hardstenen consoles ondersteunen een houten serre met geprofileerde kozijnen met bovenlicht en houten panelen. De serre heeft een half, afgeknot schilddak met leien in schub- en maasdekking, op houten consoles. Boven het dak is een balkonnetje met houten hek ondermeer met gebogen spijlen. In de gevel bevindt zich een dubbele getoogde deur met bovenlicht. De deuren liggen in een tot de topgevel doorlopende nis. Boven de deur is een vulstuk in de vorm van een flessenhals en een vensters met roedeverdeling in de sleutelgatvorm. Vanaf het bovenlicht van de balkondeuren beginnen lisenen in afwisselend hardsteen en wit en rode baksteen, die eindigen in een topgevel met vleilagen onder een afgeknot zadeldakje.

De linker travee aan de MARKT vormt samen met de travee op de afgeschuinde hoek en de rechter travee van de gevel aan de GROTE KERKSTRAAT een symmetrisch geheel.

In de eerste laag bestaan deze drie traveeën uit twee "etalagevensters" met schuin aflopend bovenlicht, deze bevinden zich tussen pilasters met geprofileerd kapiteel, op een hardstenen basement en twee halfronde smalle vensters met bovenlicht. Tussen deze vensters bevindt zich de originele houten paneeldeur met gebogen vensters en roedeverdeling. Boven de deur is een paneel. De vensters en deur worden bedekt door een lijst. Boven de deur de hardsteen consoles met balkon smeedijzeren hekwerk. In de tweede en derde laag bevinden zich driedelige vensters, waartussen in de tweede laag een dubbele getoogde deur en in de derde laag een dubbel venster. De drie traveeën worden beëindigd met een sierlijst met kruismotief in baksteen tussen de houten consoles van de overstekende goot. Op het boven gelegen dakvlak bevinden zich drie dakkapellen met zesruits vensters onder een getoogd dak.

De GEVEL aan de GROTE KERKSTRAAT bestaat uit vijf traveeën. De rechter is reeds beschreven. De tweede travee van rechts heeft in de eerste bouwlaag een niet originele dubbele deur met bovenlicht tussen hardsteen. Hierboven begint een risaliet op consoles met diverse segmentbogen en verspringende vensters ten behoeve van het trappenhuis. Dit zijn van onder naar boven drie smalle vensters, gekoppeld door één hardstenen dorpel en verzonken latei met drie sleutelgatopeningen. Verder een dubbel venster met bovenlicht en een dubbel venster zonder bovenlicht.

De risaliet heeft twee ankers in de zijkant en wordt beëindigd door een klein schilddak met hoge nok, waarin een ovaal venster met gebogen roedeverdeling. Links naast de risaliet bevindt zich de middelste travee met drie kleine vensters boven een verdiepte borstwering. In de tweede travee van links bevinden zich drie dubbele vensters met bovenlicht. De linker travee is een lagere aanbouw onder een plat dak. Deze aanbouw wordt van het hoofdvolume gescheiden door een verdiept gelegen hemelwaterafvoer. In het gevelvlak, met gecementeerde plint en zonder speklagen bevinden zich drie dubbele vensters met rondboog bovenlicht zonder roedeverdeling.

Links naast dit volume is een TUINMUUR met houten deur en vijf nissen met driehoekige bovenzijde.

De ACHTERGEVEL van het pand is blind.

Waardering

Het CAFÉ MET BOVENWONINGEN bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van cafés met bovenwoningen, gebouwd rond de eeuwwisseling. De architectuurhistorische waarden van het pand worden bepaald door het belang van het object vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Verder vanwege de bijzondere samenhang tussen exterieur en interieur van het pand.

The facade contains rectangular wooden doors and windows with fanlights of green figured glass with glazing bars, partly with a radial motif. Hardstone sill and lintel. The two-part windows and the middle section of the three-part window are arched under the fanlight. The windows of the second storey are situated in one segmental arch moulding with the windows of the third storey, in which there is also a recessed breast wall and infill piece.

FACÀDE on the MARKET side consists of two bays. The right bay has in the first storey a double window frame with arched fanlight in a hardstone surround. Two hardstone corbels support a wooden conservatory with moulded window frames with fanlights and wooden panels. The conservatory has a half, truncated hipped roof with slates in scale and Maas covering, on wooden corbels. Above the roof is a small balcony with wooden railings including curved balusters. In the facade is a double arched door with fanlight. The doors are situated in a niche extending to the gable. Above the door is an infill piece in the form of a bottle neck and a window with glazing bars in keyhole form. From the fanlight of the balcony doors begin pilasters in alternating hardstone and white and red brickwork, which end in a gable with coursing under a truncated gabled roof.

The left bay at the MARKET together with the bay on the chamfered corner and the right bay of the facade at the GROTE KERKSTRAAT form a symmetrical whole.

In the first storey these three bays consist of two "display windows" with sloping fanlight, these are situated between pilasters with moulded capital, on a hardstone basement and two semicircular narrow windows with fanlight. Between these windows is the original wooden panelled door with curved windows and glazing bars. Above the door is a panel. The windows and door are covered by a moulding. Above the door hardstone corbels with balcony wrought iron railings. In the second and third storeys are three-part windows, between which in the second storey a double arched door and in the third storey a double window. The three bays are finished with an ornamental moulding with cross motif in brickwork between the wooden corbels of the overhanging gutter. On the upper roof surface are three roof dormers with six-light windows under an arched roof.

The FACADE at the GROTE KERKSTRAAT consists of five bays. The right one is already described. The second bay from the right has in the first storey a non-original double door with fanlight between hardstone. Above this begins a risalite on corbels with various segmental arches and staggered windows for the benefit of the stairwell. These are from bottom to top three narrow windows, coupled by one hardstone sill and recessed lintel with three keyhole openings. Further a double window with fanlight and a double window without fanlight.

The risalite has two anchors on the side and is finished by a small hipped roof with high ridge, in which an oval window with curved glazing bars. To the left of the risalite is the middle bay with three small windows above a recessed breast wall. In the second bay from the left are three double windows with fanlights. The left bay is a lower annexe under a flat roof. This annexe is separated from the main volume by a recessed rainwater pipe. In the facade plane, with rendered plinth and without banding courses are three double windows with round-arch fanlight without glazing bars.

To the left of this volume is a GARDEN WALL with wooden door and five niches with triangular tops.
