Inleiding
Het CAFÉ met BOVENWONING, genaamd "In den Gouden Appel", is gelegen aan de Markt in Roermond op de hoek van een gesloten gevelwand, langs de zijgevel loopt de smalle Hanenstraat. Het pand is gebouwd in 1905 in Jugenstil en is intern verbonden met het achtergelegen pand aan de zijde van de Luifelstraat. In 1964 is het nog eens uitgebreid aan de achterzijde. In 1977 is het geheel wederom intern gewijzigd tot twee woonhuizen en café.
UITGESLOTEN VAN BESCHERMING is het achtergelegen pand aan de Luifelstraat 2/2a.
Omschrijving
Het CAFÉ met BOVENWONING heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond in drie bouwlagen onder een afgeplat half schilddak met muldenpannen. De gevel heeft een opstand van rode baksteen in kruisverband met een hardstenen plint. In de gevels bevinden zich rechthoekige houten vensters en deuren met bovenlichten.
De VOORGEVEL is smal, symmetrisch van opbouw en heeft twee traveeën. In de eerste bouwlaag boven de plint bevinden zich twee grote cafévensters met roedeverdeling in gebogen vormen. De entree ligt centraal in een portiek en heeft een houten paneeldeur met venster met rechtsboven een roedeverdeling en een bovenlicht eveneens met roedeverdeling. Hardstenen stoep en onderdorpel. Tussen de deur en de voorgevel bevinden zich vensters. In de tweede en derde bouwlaag bevinden zich twee dubbele vensters met bovenlicht met roedeverdeling. Ter hoogte van elke verdiepingsvloer bevindt zich in de gevel een horizontale geprofileerde gepleisterde band in twee of drie kleuren onder een waterlijst. Vanaf de bovenlichten boven de vensters in de tweede laag beginnen getrapt oplopende stuclagen met binnenin een glooiende vorm. De horizontale band heeft aan weerszijden een geprofileerd Jugendstilfiguur. Boven de vensters in de derde laag staat de tekst "In den gouden appel" op een donkere ondergrond. Aan weerszijden hiervan eveneens geprofileerde Jugendstilfiguren die overlopen in het onderliggende lichtere vlak. Boven de bakgoot een topgevel met gepleisterde gegolfde deklaag, dat wordt bekroond door een getopt fronton met piron. In het gevelvlak bevindt zich een dubbel venster met korfboogvormig bovenlicht.
Links in de eerste laag van de ZIJGEVEL bevindt zich een groot caféraam als in de voorgevel. Verder bevinden zich in de zijgevel een niet originele deur met bovenlicht, hardstenen stoep. Rechts naast de deur bevindt zich een klein keldervenster met rooster. In de tweede en derde bouwlaag bevinden zich twee dubbele vensters met bovenlicht onder een strek. Hardstenen dorpel. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een rand baksteen in muizentandprofiel.
e ACHTERGEVEL steekt gedeeltelijk uit boven het achtergelegen pand en is gepleisterd.
Waardering
Het CAFÉ MET WOONHUIS bezitten cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van cafés met bovenwoning. Description
The CAFÉ with UPPER STOREY DWELLING has a rectangular floor plan in three storeys under a flattened half-hipped roof with pantiles. The facade has a course of red bricks in cross bond with an ashlar plinth. The facades contain rectangular timber windows and doors with fanlights.
The FRONT FACADE is narrow, symmetrical in composition and has two bays. In the first storey above the plinth there are two large café windows with glazing bars in curved forms. The entrance is centrally located in a portico and has a timber panelled door with window with glazing bars on the upper right and a fanlight also with glazing bars. Ashlar step and lower threshold. Between the door and the front facade there are windows. In the second and third storeys there are two double windows with fanlight with glazing bars. At the level of each floor joist in the facade there is a horizontal profiled rendered band in two or three colours under a drip moulding. From the fanlights above the windows in the second storey graduated rising stucco layers begin with a curved form within. The horizontal band has a profiled Jugendstil figure on each side. Above the windows in the third storey stands the text "In den gouden appel" on a dark background. On each side of this also profiled Jugendstil figures which flow into the underlying lighter area. Above the gutter a gable with rendered wavy coping layer, which is crowned by a topped pediment with ridge cresting. In the facade section there is a double window with basket-arch fanlight.
To the left in the first storey of the SIDE FACADE there is a large café window as in the front facade. Further in the side facade there is a non-original door with fanlight, ashlar step. To the right of the door there is a small cellar window with grille. In the second and third storeys there are two double windows with fanlight under a stretch course. Ashlar threshold. The facade is terminated by a course of bricks in mouse-tooth profile.
The REAR FACADE projects partially above the building situated behind and is rendered.
