Inleiding

Introduction

OFFICIALS' DWELLINGS located at the Vrijveld in Roermond. The buildings were constructed in 1921-1923 as the first large-scale housing project on the east side of the railway line. The buildings on the Thorbeckestraat, Ch. Ruijsstraat and R. Regoutstraat form a triangular enclosed building block with various types of dwellings. The block steps back regularly and has various axes of symmetry. The dwellings vary through the application of bay windows, internal and external balconies, gabled roofs with various decorative brickwork and different corner solutions.

Description

OFFICIALS' DWELLINGS, with mainly rectangular or L-shaped floor plan in two storeys under a continuous hipped roof parallel to the street axes. On the roof are original red tuiles du Nord and roof dormer windows or small roof windows.

Some buildings have a gabled roof on the street side. The buildings have walls of brickwork in Flemish bond with a plinth with roll moulding. In the facades are mainly rectangular wooden window frames with fanlight with glazing bars.

Above the windows a roll moulding in decorative brickwork.

The FRONT FACADES of the buildings consist of two and three bays, except for the buildings at the location of a recessed facade and the corner solutions at the street corners. The entrance has a wooden door with two small round-arched windows, a window with lozenge-shaped glazing bars or an oval window, all under a fanlight with glazing bars. The triangular bay windows consist of a three-part wooden window frame or of three separate wooden window frames separated by brick. The balconies have a wooden or brick balcony railing. In the gabled roofs are small square windows.

The REAR FACADES consist of two bays, except for the corner buildings. Many dwellings have an original extension at the location of the kitchen, some buildings have a balcony at the rear.

On the ground floor are double wooden garden doors.

The buildings set back from the street have a FENCE with railings and round accents.

The STRUCTURE of the INTERIOR of most buildings is intact as evidenced by the location of hallway, stairwell and rooms.

Important interior components include the staircases and the sliding doors.
