Inleiding
Stuwgedeelte van het stuw- en sluiscomplex gelegen in de Roermondse Weerd. De stuw werd omstreeks 1926 gebouwd naar ontwerp van Rijkswaterstaat.
De stuw van Roermond vormt samen met de stuwen van Linne en Belfeld het drietal stuwen dat in het kader van de Maaskanalisatie in de jaren twintig van de 20ste eeuw in Midden- en Noord-Limburg werden aangelegd.
Omschrijving
De stuw bestaat uit een poirée (lage verwijderbare schotten dwars in de rivier) en een stoney (constructie met regelbare schuiven). De stoney tegen de westelijke oever van de Maas heeft drie betonnen pilonen met daartussen 2 stroomgaten. De pilonen van de stuw zijn opgetrokken uit onbekleed beton. Over het geheel ligt een schuin overkragende metalen constructie met daarop twee rechthoekige houten gebouwtjes onder vlakke tentdaken. In deze gebouwtjes bevindt zich de authentieke hefinrichting. Op halve hoogte van de pilonen ligt aan de bovenstroomse zijde van de pilonen een loopbrug over de stroomgaten. De loopbrug rust op een door een sprong in de dikte van de pilonen gevormde dorpel. Vanuit deze dorpel leiden trappen aan weerszijden van de pilonen naar een lager gelegen en opnieuw uitspringend plateau aan de benedenstroomse zijde. De schuiven worden bewogen in verticale sponningen in de pilonen.
De poirée bestaat uit een metalen brug met daar overheen rails waarover een kraan kan rijden om de schotten te plaatsen.
Waardering
De stuw is van belang vanwege zijn gave, architectonische hoogwaardige verschijningsvorm en als beeldbepalende factor in het vlakke landschap van het winterbed van de Maas. De stuw is verder van belang vanwege zijn rol in de kanalisatie van de Maas waarmee in het begin van deze eeuw op grootscheepse schaal een begin werd gemaakt. Eveneens is de stuw van belang vanwege de vroege, kale toepassing van beton in een waterbouwkundig kunstwerk.
De stuw bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technologische en typologische ontwikkeling met een pionierskarakter. De architectuurhistorische waarden van de stuw wordt worden bepaald door het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de bouwtechniek, de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en het innovatieve materiaalgebruik.
