Introduction

A lodging/quarters building (building B) constructed on a mainly rectangular ground plan, comprising two storeys and a roof storey, built entirely in red brick and covered with hipped roofs. The entrance section of building B is precisely aligned with the axis of the gate passage of building A. The architect was Captain of Engineers A.G. Boost; his design dates from 1938, and the building was put into use in 1939.

Description

The lodging/quarters building stands on a slightly recessed plinth in the form of a high brick roll moulding course and has a brick dentil course at the level of the underpanels. Building B in its entirety comprises four divisions: a staircase positioned eccentrically in the front facade that projects slightly forward, containing the entrance section and covered with a hipped roof placed transversely to the main form; a short residential section on the right; a long residential section to the left of the entrance section with the ridge of the left part slightly higher than the right; a single-storey annexe under a hipped roof at the far left. The facades on all storeys are furnished with steel windows with glazing bars, the staircase has above the entrance section three vertical glass strips with narrow windows on the left and right and a concrete canopy. The hipped roofs of building B are laid with red, fired improved Dutch tiles and have a generous overhang. Internally various living spaces and washrooms; the corridors are finished with terrazzo floors or tiling, the walls smoothly rendered and in exposed brickwork, glass tiles between corridor and quarters rooms, window sills and vestibules tiled (glazed tiles), wooden wall cupboards in quarters rooms, imperial staircase laid with grey natural stone and furnished with wooden handrail in copper fixings, concrete floors, original interior doors, roof structure of steel roof trusses (H-profile sections with braces and beams).

Valuation

The lodging/quarters building (building B) to the design of Captain of Engineers A.G. Boost is of general importance by reason of: its age; its architectural-historical value as an object of military architecture, more particularly the barracks construction of the twentieth century according to the principles of the pavilion system; its well-preserved main form, structure, layout and detailing; its significance for the history of national defence; the memory of the Second World War; its connection with the (history of the) city of Roermond; the close relationship that exists between the namesake of the barracks, his place in the history of our country and his role in the struggle for Roermond; the functional, historical and spatial relationship with the memorial on the grounds in front of the barracks, with the inner courtyard as well as with the gate building with sports hall wing and camp command wing (building A).
