Inleiding
Neo-gotisch grafmonument voor architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers en zijn echtgenote A. Alberdingk Thijm. Het grafmonument is gebouwd naar een ontwerp van Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. Het grafmonument bevindt zich direct achter de bisschoppenkapel die centraal op de begraafplaats is gesitueerd.
Omschrijving
Grafmonument bestaande uit een natuurstenen sokkel met vier hoekpilasters. Het grafmonument is uitgevoerd in natuursteen. Op de voorzijde van de sokkel is een koperen gravure met dodenmasker van architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers aangebracht vervaardigd door Vic. Spreukels in 1921.
Op de sokkel een natuursteen kolom met aan elke zijde een zandstenen beeld van een van de vier evangelisten op een kleine console onder een spitsboogvormig baldakijn. Het grafmonument wordt bekroond met een stenen kruis.
Waardering
Het grafmonument bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke en typologische ontwikkeling als grafmonument voor een van de belangrijkste architecten van rooms-katholieke huize in Nederland in de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw. Het grafmonument bezit architectuurhistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de ornamentiek. Ensemblewaarde ontleent het object aan de situering op het Oude Kerkhof van Roermond en daarmee van belang voor het aanzien van de stad. Description
Funerary monument consisting of a natural stone plinth with four corner pilasters. The funerary monument is executed in natural stone. On the front of the plinth a copper engraving with a death mask of architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers has been applied, made by Vic. Spreukels in 1921.
On the plinth a natural stone column with on each side a sandstone image of one of the four evangelists on a small corbel beneath a pointed-arch baldachin. The funerary monument is crowned with a stone cross.

The funerary monument possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a spiritual and typological development as a funerary monument for one of the most important architects of the Roman Catholic tradition in the Netherlands in the second half of the 19th century.
