Introduction
DWELLING HOUSE with rear building and conservatory, built circa 1880-1890 in eclectic forms. The house was originally the residence of mayor Sigmond but also served as an office and café. Today the building has a residential function once more.
Description
A partially detached dwelling house of two storeys with a cornice-topped facade constructed in stretcher bond under a tentdak roof covered with suppressed Tuiles du Nord and roofing felt with hips. The side and rear facades of the front building are constructed from yellow IJsselsteentjes bricks laid in cross bond. The front facade is made of red, machine-made brick. The building is partially cellarage at the rear.
The front facade has three window bays and a striking rounded corner also with a window bay with dormer window. This section is fitted with a quarter-round glass pane. The facade is articulated by a sandstone plinth, a profiled string course and a frieze with projecting gutter moulding and ornamented with drips. The facade openings are straight-headed. The windows have a profiled, cemented surround and are fitted with single-pane sash windows with undivided fanlight. On the ground floor the windows have sandstone sills on blocks and at the top a small canopy ornamented with palmettes. The richly ornamented wooden wing door with wooden and glass panels is located on the right in the facade. The glass panels are fitted with a wrought-iron ornamental grille with scrollwork. The door is further ornamented with, among other things, broken semi-circular pediments, fluted corbels, diamond bosses and a Corinthian half-column.
The side facades and rear facades are considerably more restrained in detailing. The windows here have undergone some alterations. In the rear facade the cellar window is also located. At the rear is further the rectangular rear building with upper storey that transitions into a rectangular wooden conservatory (winter garden) with upper storey of the rear building. The walls of the rear building are rough-cast plastered. Iron wall anchors are built into the walls for the beam ceiling. The side hips of the rear building are covered with triangular zinc shingles. The gutter has a zinc egg-and-dart moulding. The straight-headed windows have heavy frames with T-frames. At the level of the conservatory there is a mortared wall with two segmental arch gates. Internally the house still retains a great deal of original detailing. In most of the living rooms there are ornamented, stuccoed ceilings with floral ornament. The front room on the upper floor still has traces of the original polychromy. Other ornament: marble fireplaces, marble wainscoting in the entrance, marble staircase to the servants' dwelling, cast-iron stair riser spindles and wooden stair newel post. Almost all doors are still original; generally wooden panelled doors (in the living room with diamond bosses). The windows are fitted on the inside with collapsible, composite wooden shutters. The window shutters on the outside have disappeared. The entrance is carried through on the south side and has at the rear a (partially removed) marble step which gives access to the long corridor connecting the front building with the rear building and the servants' dwellings.
At the rear the building has a small, narrow cellar with a barrel vault.
