PARKAANLEG (onderdeel 2)

Omschrijving:

PARK LAYOUT (component 2)

Description:

The park of Ossenbroek consists essentially of two sections. In the south-eastern corner a simple garden layout with lawns, copses and a winding pond near the house (1). A more estate-like section with avenues, woods, arable land and meadowland covers the north and west of the country estate. South of the house, finally, stands the hunting keeper's lodge (3).

The boundaries are as follows. East of the front facade of the house is a strip that forms the eastern boundary of the country estate and consists of oaks on either side of the road and to the west of it the located ditch and linden rows and avenues. The ditch has two western right-angled connections. The southern one forms the northern boundary of the park section, to the south of the northern one runs the boundary of the entire country estate. The northern one is partially planted with oaks. The southern boundary of the country estate and the park section is formed by the bent oak avenue. The western boundary runs east of the road.

The park-like section lies in the south-east of the country estate and is, as already indicated, surrounded by avenues and ditches. North and east of the house are lawns. North of those the elongated, winding pond with in it several small islands. The pond was created in the first half of the nineteenth century. Around 1850 it had a more compact form. Its current form has not changed since around 1900. However, according to information from the current owner, the garden house has disappeared. Halfway along the pond there was probably a bridge (to the garden house) which has also disappeared. The pond is almost entirely surrounded by deciduous woodland (including oaks and acacias, also rhododendrons). Partly because of the modest undulation, the pond breathes a very secluded atmosphere. South of the house is the road, to the west a vegetable garden and a grass field. Previously (around 1900) the entire park section was more open, which meant there was better sight from the house to the pond and to the western part of the country estate. The current enclosure corresponds more with the situation around 1850.

South of the house is a triangular area, partly planted with rhododendrons, onto which various avenues open. South of that lies - in a half open, half secluded context - the forest keeper's lodge on a plane tree avenue.

The western section of the country estate consists of a simple grid structure filled with meadowland, deciduous and coniferous woodland, partly in the form of planting beds. This structure already existed around 1800 and has not been fundamentally changed since. This more utilitarian section has also been continued to the north of the actual park in the form of arable land - the plot between two ditches which was already mentioned above.

Valuation:

The park layout of Ossenbroek is of general importance because of: - the stratification of the country estate, which consists of land reclamation structures such as ditches, partly filled with park-like elements; - the mixture of agricultural and ornamental elements, such as woodland plots with planting beds, arable land and meadowland on the one hand and the winding pond with islands, undulation and woodland on the other; - the fine avenues with oak, linden and plane tree planting that function as structuring elements that interweave the country estate with the surroundings and because of tenant rights have roots in the management of the country estate; - the beauty of the composition of the country estate, characterized by an alternation of open and closed sections and of rectangular and more landscape-like sections.
