HUIS (onderdeel 1)

Omschrijving:

HOUSE (component 1)

Description:

The house consists of several residential and commercial buildings and walls surrounding a rectangular courtyard. The country estate is accessed by several large and small gates. Opposite the main entrance is a gate with stone piers topped with balls and an ironwork grille. In the middle of the courtyard a wooden pigeon loft, in front of the house linden trees. Based on the proportions of the sash windows the building was constructed in the second half of the eighteenth century, possibly partly using salvaged bricks. According to a commemorative stone at the main entrance of the dwelling, it was remodelled in 1850 - the current main entrance was possibly created then. The plaque bears the inscription 'HUIS OSSENBROEK 1850'. The complex was restored and remodelled between 1972-1976 according to designs by architect J. de Jong from Schayk. Some large barns were demolished then - or already around 1969.

On the eastern side of the courtyard is the main building, the dwelling, a long single-storey building under a half-hipped roof with red traditional Dutch tiles. Lattice infill has been used in the gable ends. The building has a clay plaster layer. Around it are multi-paned sash windows with shutters. Internally the building still partially retains the old structure that recalls the old division between manor and farmhouse which existed until 1976. Since then the building has had no agricultural use. Various old interior walls, floor joists, doors and door surrounds etc. have been preserved.

On the other sides of the courtyard are single-storey barns, storage buildings, a garage, fitted with saddle roofs and hipped roofs. These buildings contain among other things parts of old roof truss structures.

Valuation:

Huis Ossenbroek, probably built in the second half of the eighteenth century and remodelled several times, is of general importance because of: - the typology of the house, a walled farmstead with residential and service buildings; as such it is a characteristic and rare example of a farmhouse that has evolved into a country estate; - special components that refer to the status and use of the house such as the pigeon loft and hunting room; - the ironwork grille; - alongside a relatively intact main form, many original details and structures have been preserved.
