Introduction.

Originally SCHOOLMASTER'S DWELLING with SCHOOL, built in 1855 after a design by H. van Tulder, in eclectic round-arch style. In 1923 a COUNCIL CHAMBER was built above the school. Internally, various alterations took place in 1940 and 1960.

The building is situated on the Dorpsstraat, in the centre of Aarle-Rixtel.

Description.

The building has a complex building mass. On the Dorpsstraat there is a two-storey section on a rectangular plan beneath a hipped roof. The ridge runs parallel to the street and is provided with a roof turret with a small bell and spire. The front facade spans three broad bays and has a central avant-corps with a stepped gable. The gable on either side of this is provided with a border of crenellations above an arch frieze with projections of small corner turrets. On the front is a double natural stone staircase with landing and brick balustrade. This addition dates from circa 1935. In the balustrade there is an arched wooden door on the ground floor. On either side of this are placed natural stone facade stones. The fanlights of windows and door are placed beneath plastered eyebrow arches. The door is located in the central avant-corps; the fanlight has a fan-shaped glazing pattern. The windows are provided with a small glazing pattern with a fan shape in the fanlights. In the basement, on either side of the landing, arched windows are set with anti-theft bars. To the left and right of this building mass, single-storey sections on a rectangular plan extend. Both building masses are provided with hipped roofs. The top of the stepped gable is decorated with a polychrome coat of arms.

In the extension of these building masses, later extensions are realized. On the left side of the building there is a single-storey section under a gabled roof, roofed with Flemish tiles. In this extension there are wooden doors and six-pane windows. On the right side, a single-storey wing extends beneath a hipped roof. Here in the middle of the facade a blocky portico is placed. Plastered fields show the inscription "ANNO" and "MDCCCLV (1855)". The windows of this elongated extension have straight fanlights, divided by obliquely placed glazing bars. Behind the main mass is a taller building mass on a rectangular plan beneath a hipped roof, placed parallel to that of the main mass. The entire building is executed in brick, provided with pilasters and an arch frieze. The roofs are covered with slate.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance. It has cultural-historical significance as an example of administrative and educational development. It has architectural-historical significance due to its castle-like design elements and the place it occupies in the oeuvre of architect Van Tulder. It is also significant due to the complex building history, the materialization of the functional changes that the building has undergone. It has ensemble values in relation to the church, rectory and Holy Heart statue. It has remained in good condition.
