Omschrijving onderdeel 1:

HOOFDGEBOUW (Blikkenburg).

Description of component 1:

MAIN BUILDING (Blikkenburg).

The house and park at Blikkenburg were created around 1850 in conjunction with each other; both were designed by K.G. Zocher. A design drawing for the house as executed has been preserved and is now held in a private collection. Characteristic is the elevated position of the whitewashed country house within the landscape park, with window bays situated on sight axes in the park. The building, erected on a rectangular ground plan in a simple, well-proportioned neoclassical style, consists of a basement, piano nobile, first storey and attic beneath a hipped roof covered with black slate and featuring a flattened apex with four chimneys at the corners. The symmetrical front façade is three bays wide and provided at the corners with broad, flat pilasters. Centrally in the façade, spanning two storeys, is a recessed entrance section. A sandstone step of three treads leads via a portico of double columns with a balcony above to the double front door, which is flanked by pilasters with leaf capitals. The semicircular fanlight above the door has a half-star-shaped leaded glass pattern. On the first storey a double door with double fanlight provides access to the balcony above the portico. This balcony is already indicated on Zocher's design drawing; it has a simple geometric balustrade. The covering of the balcony by means of an eastern roof on thin pillars dates from a later period. On either side of the entrance section are, on both storeys, empire windows with sandstone sill and cornice. In all façades the windows on the first storey have one pane fewer in height than the windows on the piano nobile. In 1912 the windows still had shutters; these have since disappeared. The transition to the roof is marked by a simple gutter moulding. The right side façade has no clear bay division. On the central axis two empire windows are placed one above the other with a door at basement level. To the left of this door is a multi-pane window and to the right of the central axis at piano nobile level is a two-pane window. The rear façade is five bays wide and provided with austere empire windows. Three of the window openings are closed with a painted panel. At basement level there is a door in the centre, which is flanked on either side by multi-pane windows. The left side façade is three bays wide and in the left and central bay at piano nobile and first storey level is provided with empire windows and at basement level with multi-pane windows. Against the right side of the façade is a garden room built around 1910, beneath a flattened hipped roof covered with slate. On the front and rear sides this room is provided with large three-part windows with a fanlight of small panes. On the front side a comparable window has been installed with four parts, the middle two of which are opening doors that provide access via a wooden staircase to the garden. In material use and rhythm of the façade surfaces the extension is consistent with the house.

- by reason of its characteristic position within the landscape park;

- by reason of its functional-spatial relationship with the park and with the other components of the country estate.
