Inleiding
Voormalige SIGARENFABRIEK, gebouwd in samenhang met de directeurswoning op Vredeman de Vriesstraat 1, waarschijnlijk door dezelfde architect in eclectische stijl. Na slechts enkele jaren veranderde de functie van sigarenfabriek in kaaspakhuis onder de naam Freia, waartoe het gebouw aan de achterzijde werd uitgebreid tot de Wijbrand de Geeststraat en daar voorzien van een gevel in de Overgangsstijl. In de late jaren '80 werd het pakhuis verbouwd tot studentenhuisvesting door woningbouwvereniging Patrimonium, waarbij het interieur geheel werd veranderd.
Omschrijving
V.m. Sigarenfabriek op nagenoeg rechthoekige grondslag van twee bouwlagen plus topgevel en drie traveeën, waarvan de middelste iets breder is. Het pand heeft een uitgemetselde plint , waarboven muurwerk van roodbruine baksteen, afgewisseld met dorpelbanden van gele verblendsteen. De verdiepingsvloeren worden gemarkeerd door muurankers. Alle muuropeningen hebben segmentbogen met natuurstenen aanzetten en zijn gevuld met kleurig vlechtwerk. De vensters hebben afzaten van geglazuurde baksteen. De tussenstijlen hebben decoratief snijwerk. Op de tweede bouwlaag zijn ter hoogte van de middendorpels van de vensters penanten uitgemetseld, die naar boven verbreden en de geveltop verdelen in drie spaarvelden. Deze velden worden naar boven afgesloten door een klimmend rondboogfries, waarvan de boogvelden metselmozaiek hebben. De geveltop heeft schoudertjes met hardstenen afzaten. De top heeft tussen twee gemetselde overhoekse pinakels een ornament van hardsteen. De veel eenvoudigere zijgevel is opgebouwd uit bruine baksteen met cordonlijsten van gele verblendsteen. Ten behoeve van de huidige functie als studentenhuisvesting werden lichtopeningen en brandtrappen toegevoegd. Er resteert nog een oorspronkelijke kajuit met een hijsbalk. Het zadeldak is belegd met gesmoorde golfpannen.

V.m. sigarenfabriek van algemeen architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch belang:

Introduction
Former CIGAR FACTORY, built in conjunction with the director's house on Vredeman de Vriesstraat 1, probably by the same architect in eclectic style. After only a few years the function changed from cigar factory to cheese warehouse under the name Freia, for which purpose the building was extended at the rear to Wijbrand de Geeststraat and furnished there with a facade in Transitional style. In the late 1980s the warehouse was converted to student housing by housing association Patrimonium, whereby the interior was completely altered.
Description
Former Cigar factory on approximately rectangular ground plan of two storeys plus gable wall and three bays, of which the middle one is slightly wider. The building has a built-out plinth, above which brickwork of reddish-brown brick, alternating with sill bands of yellow facing brick. The storey floors are marked by wall anchors. All wall openings have segmental arches with natural stone bases and are filled with coloured interlace work. The windows have reveals of glazed brick. The intermediate mullions have decorative carved work. On the second storey, at the height of the intermediate sills of the windows, pilasters are built out, which broaden upward and divide the gable top into three spandrels. These fields are closed off at the top by a rising round-arch frieze, whose arch fields have brickwork mosaic. The gable top has shoulders with hard stone reveals. The top has between two built-in corner pinnacles an ornament of hard stone. The much simpler side facade is constructed from brown brick with cordon courses of yellow facing brick. For the purposes of the present function as student housing, light openings and fire stairs were added. There remains still an original hoist-bay with a hoisting beam. The gabled roof is covered with smothered barrel tiles.

Former cigar factory of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance:
