Omschrijving
Gabbema Gasthuis. Gebouwd in 1906 naar ontwerp van architect W.C. de Groot. Verdiepingloos gebouw op U-vormige plattegrond, opgetrokken in art-nouveau-vormen uit oranje-rode verblendsteen op trasraam van doffe grijze steen als plint; schilddaken gedekt door rood- en groen geglazuurde pannen.
Verlevendiging van dakvlakken en muurwerk door respectievelijk dakkapellen bekroond door aardewerk pironnen en de toepassing van verschillende soorten en kleuren steen - verglaasd en niet-verglaasd, met en zonder profiel, voor banden, waterlijsten, rollagen, hanekammen en siermetselwerk in boogtrommels etc.
Regelmatige indeling der gevels: in het midden der U-vorm ligt de ingangspartij, met dubbele houten deuren met rondboogvensters en rechthoekige vensters rondom, onder met rode geglazuurde pannen belegde luifel op geprofileerde houten ondersteuningen waartussen bankjes, het geheel bekroond door polychroom tegeltableau in art-nouveau-vormen, waarboven torentje met houten opbouw met klok en ingesnoerde naaldspits met roodgeglazuurde leitjes gedekt.
Op het tegeltableau het opschrift "GABBEMA GASTHUIS", overvleugeld door arend met in zijn klauwen een konijn als voedsel voor de uilen en kraaien onder zijn vleugels (bescherming en liefdadigheid); gekoppelde en enkele vensters met meerruitsverdeling beganegronds; rondboog- en rechthoekige vensters met en zonder luikjes in de dakvlakken. Geprofileerde en boven de zoldervensters omlopende gootlijst en halfronde zinken vergaarbakken met geschulpt randje. Aan de binnenzijde der hoeken van de U-vorm een draaibare bewerkte gietijzeren steun.
In het interieur betegelingen met florale motieven in art-deco-vormen, polychrome ornamenttegels van een dergelijke vormgeving en eenvoudige glas-in-loodramen.
In het gasthuis is een klok van P. Seest, 1762?, diam. 32 cm. aanwezig.
Het voorterrein voorzien van een klinkerbestrating en afgezet door een smeedijzeren hekwerk in eenvoudige art-nouveau-vormen op gemetseld muurtje en tussen dito palen.

Description
Gabbema Gasthuis. Built in 1906 to the design of architect W.C. de Groot. Single-storey building on U-shaped plan, constructed in art-nouveau forms from orange-red facing brick on a dry grey stone framework as plinth; hipped roofs covered with red and green glazed tiles.
Enlivenment of roof planes and masonry through respectively roof dormers crowned with earthenware finials and the application of various types and colours of stone - glazed and unglazed, with and without moulding, for bands, drip mouldings, rolled courses, cockcombs and ornamental brickwork in arch voussoirs etc.
Regular arrangement of the facades: in the middle of the U-shape lies the entrance section, with double wooden doors with round-arched windows and rectangular windows around, underneath covered with red glazed tile canopy on profiled wooden supports between which benches, the whole crowned by polychrome tile tableau in art-nouveau forms, above which small tower with wooden superstructure with clock and tapered needle spire covered with red-glazed slate tiles.
On the tile tableau the inscription "GABBEMA GASTHUIS", flanked by an eagle with in its talons a rabbit as food for the owls and crows beneath its wings (protection and charity); paired and single windows with multiple-pane glazing on ground floor; round-arched and rectangular windows with and without shutters in the roof planes. Profiled and running above the attic windows cornice and semicircular zinc gutters with scalloped edge. On the inner side of the corners of the U-shape a rotating worked cast-iron support.
In the interior tilework with floral motifs in art-deco forms, polychrome ornamental tiles of similar design and simple stained-glass windows.
In the gasthuis is a clock by P. Seest, 1762?, diam. 32 cm. present.
The forecourt furnished with brick paving and enclosed by wrought-iron railings in simple art-nouveau forms on brick wall and between similar posts.
