Inleiding

INTERIEUR: De begane grond is in verregaande mate in originele staat bewaard gebleven.

Introduction

DIRECTOR'S HOUSE built around 1900 in Eclectic style adjacent to the former cigar factory. The architect was possibly Nicolaas Adema from Franeker. Stylistically, influences from Art Nouveau can be identified, among others in the tile tableaux, Neo-Gothic in the front facade and Neo-Renaissance in the interior. The building is constructed from reddish-brown brick and yellow facing brick with hard stone decoration. The client was cigar manufacturer D. Hoekstra, who at the same time had the factory building on Vredeman de Vriesstraat 3 constructed. Hoekstra had already left by 1903. Subsequently it was owned by foodstuffs wholesaler Boersma. The building is set somewhat back within the facade wall, the transition is softened by the built-on veranda.

Description

EXTERIOR: Dwelling on rectangular ground plan, two storeys plus roof and two bays, of which the left one projects and is considerably wider than the other. A wooden veranda is built on across the entire width, which steps back slightly at the height of the right bay. The floor is laid with hexagonal, variously coloured tiles in a frame of square tiles. On the west side and at the division of the bays, walls of wood and glass provide protection. The balcony above the veranda rests on corbels on hard stone piers with braces, furnished with decorative carved work. The panelled front door is surrounded by side and fanlights. The windows have wrought-iron grilles in Art Nouveau style. The fanlights have coloured stained glass. A hexagonal paraffin lamp is incorporated in the middle window. The left bay has on the first storey a three-part display window with opening doors in the middle with fanlights, furnished with coloured stained glass. Above the lintel are three segmental arches on natural stone bases. The arch fields are filled with coloured interlace work. At the height of the intermediate mullions of the windows, profiled pilasters are built out on either side, carrying a slightly projecting arch frieze. The gable top has in the middle a rectangular window under a round arch, whose field is filled with a coloured tile tableau with flowers. On either side of this window are two round-arched spandrels, likewise filled with coloured tiles. The cut-off top is furnished with two built-in pinnacles, which above the eaves course in natural stone are continued. The right bay has a window under a segmental arch, above which a tooth course, followed by a projecting round-arch frieze.

The rear facade has two storeys plus roof and is three bays wide. On the ground floor there is a glass display window over two bays. On the second storey are three rectangular sash windows. Below the roof edge runs a frieze with a series of built-in crosses in yellow brick. The cut-off hipped roof is covered with blue glazed Frisian barrel tiles.

INTERIOR: The ground floor is preserved to a great extent in original condition. The vestibule has a marble floor and a painted wainscot, which is finished with a profiled moulding. The draught door has a pronounced Neo-Renaissance surround with fluted pilasters and above a profiled archivolt, combined with etched panes in Art Nouveau forms in the door and in the lunette. All doors have panels and profiled surrounds and, like the windows, original hinges and fastenings. In the front room are preserved, among others, a fireplace with marble mantel and neo-classical ornaments on the chimney breast. The richly decorated stucco ceiling retains the original colours. The suite display window is particularly richly executed with, among others, a reversible fluted needle with composite capital. The rear room has an identical fireplace and ceiling. The glass display window to the conservatory has cut glass in the fanlights. The rear glass display window has stained glass in the fanlights in Art Nouveau forms. Behind in the corridor a small fountain of polished black granite is preserved. An identical example is on the upper storey. In the kitchen built out to the rear is preserved, among others, a cupboard wall. The staircase has richly worked newels, profiled handrails and cast-iron balusters. On the second storey rooms were opened up, lowered ceilings were installed, fireplaces were altered. Preserved, among others, is the stained glass in the glass display window in the front facade.

Assessment

DIRECTOR'S HOUSE of general architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance:

- because of the rich architecture in a mixture of Neo-Gothic, Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau;

- because of the integrity of the exterior and interior, particularly on the ground floor;

- as a typical representative of a richly decorated director's house, situated next to the factory.
