Inleiding.
Het SCHOOLGEBOUW voor de R.K. Jongensschool "St. Jozef", met aangebouwd WOONHUIS voor de hoofdonderwijzer werd in 1938 gebouwd in een traditionalistische bouwstijl. Het ontwerp werd geleverd door de architect H.W. Valk. Het gebouw is gelegen aan de zuidelijke zijde van de Nicolaas van Eschstraat en kijkt uit op de spoorlijn. Aan de achterzijde van het schoolgebouw ligt een schoolplein, met aan de rechterzijde een losstaande gymnastiekzaal (uit 1938 en eveneens naar ontwerp van H.W. Valk) die buiten de bescherming valt. In 1953 werden de twee vleugels van het schoolgebouw uitgebreid met ruimtes voor toilettenblokken. Het schoolgebouw is thans in gebruik als cursuscentrum.
Omschrijving.
Het gebouw heeft een L-vormige plattegrond en bestaat uit twee eenlaags vleugels waarin de schoollokalen zijn ondergebracht en een tweelaags woonhuis op de hoek waar deze vleugels samenkomen. Aan de linkerzijde van het woonhuis is een kleine eenlaags aanbouw onder lessenaarsdak gebouwd. De schoolvleugels hebben een hoog ingeknikt schilddak, het woonhuis een hoog ingeknikt schilddak met wolfseind. De daken zijn gedekt met Hollandse en verbeterde Hollandse pannen en hebben een zinken goot. Boven het dak van de woning bevindt zich een schoorsteen. De wit geschilderde muren van het schoolgebouw zijn opgetrokken in handvorm kloostermoppen in wild verband.
Het woonhuis heeft in de voorgevel en in de oostelijke zijgevel op de benedenverdieping achttienruits schuifvensters, op de tweede bouwlaag twaalfruits schuifvensters. Deze vensters worden aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een betonnen latei. Aan de bovenzijde van de afgewolfde voorgevel van het woonhuis zijn vlechtingen aangebracht, die onbeschilderd zijn gelaten.
De hoofdingang van de school bevindt zich direct rechts van het woonhuis en bestaat uit een dubbele, houten paneeldeur met achtruits vensters in een ondiep portaal met verspringende segmentbogen. Rechts hiervan is de eenlaags schoolvleugel voorzien van afwisselend vierkante negenruits vensters met klapramen en langgerekte horizontale zevenentwintigruits vensters met klapraam in het middengedeelte. Dezelfde vensterindeling vinden we in de oostelijke gevel van het schoolgebouw. In de rechterzijgevel van de schoolvleugel langs de Nic. van Eschstraat zijn een negental kleine hoge spleetvensters met klapraam aangebracht, die een -bij een uitbreiding uit 1959 ontstane- ruimte met toiletblokken verlichten. Op de rechterhoek van deze korte gevel bevindt zich nog een poortstijl met ezelsrug. Langs de noordelijke en oostelijke zijde wordt het schoolplein afgesloten door de twee schoolvleugels, waarin respectievelijk drie (oostelijke vleugel) en vier (noordelijke vleugel) klaslokalen zijn ondergebracht: elk klaslokaal is voorzien van een samenstel van drie rechtgesloten vensters voorzien van ramen met roedenverdeling. In de schoolvleugel achter de onderwijzerswoning zijn aan de zijde van het schoolplein -aan weerszijden van de klaslokalen- twee ingangen aangebracht, beide evenals de hoofdingang voorzien van dubbele, houten paneeldeuren met achtruits vensters. In de langs de Nic. van Esch gelegen schoolvleugel is aan de zijde van het schoolplein aan de linkerzijde nog een kleinere ingang aangebracht met een houten deur met zesruits venster.
In het interieur is de oorspronkelijke indeling geheel gehandhaafd. Via de hoofdingang komt men in een hal, die in een L-vorm langs de rechter- en achterzijde van de onderwijzerswoning ligt. Deze hal geeft via twee boogvormige doorgangen toegang tot de gangen langs de schoollokalen. In de binnenmuren tussen deze gangen en de lokalen zijn vensters aangebracht. De muren zijn onder deze vensters voorzien van een zwarte tegelband. Aan de uiteinden van beide schoolvleugels is een ruimte met toiletten ondergebracht. Links in de hal direct achter de hoofdingang bevinden zich twee deuren, die toegang geven tot de onderwijzerswoning. Aan de straatzijde is voor het gebouw een smalle tuin aangelegd, die is afgezet door een laag bakstenen muurtje met een ijzeren hekwerk, waartussen bakstenen hekstijlen met ezelsrug.
Waardering.
Het object is van algemeen belang en bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van de typologische ontwikkeling van het schoolgebouw. Het gebouw is van architectuurhistorisch belang, als voorbeeld van een traditionalistisch schoolgebouw en door de plaats die het gebouw inneemt in het oeuvre van de architect H.W. Valk. Er is sprake van een redelijk hoge mate van gaafheid, zowel wat het interieur als het exterieur betreft: de oorspronkelijke indeling van het gebouw is gehandhaafd en er hebben geen ingrijpende wijzigingen plaatsgevonden. Tenslotte is het gebouw van belang uit het oogpunt van zeldzaamheid; door afbraak is dit type zeldzaam geworden.

The SCHOOL BUILDING for the R.K. Boys' School "St. Jozef", with an adjoining DWELLING HOUSE for the headmaster was built in 1938 in a traditionalist architectural style. Description.
The building has an L-shaped floor plan and consists of two single-storey wings in which the classrooms are housed and a two-storey dwelling house at the corner where these wings meet. On the left side of the dwelling house a small single-storey extension has been built under a desk roof. The school wings have a high-pitched hipped roof, the dwelling house a high-pitched hipped roof with half-hipped end. The roofs are covered with Dutch and improved Dutch tiles and have a zinc gutter. Above the roof of the house is a chimney. The white-painted walls of the school building are constructed in hand-moulded cloister bricks in random bond.
The dwelling house has on the front facade and on the eastern side facade on the ground floor eighteen-pane sash windows, on the second storey twelve-pane sash windows. These windows are closed off at the top by a concrete lintel. At the top of the hipped front facade of the dwelling house wattle-work has been applied, which has been left unpainted.
The main entrance of the school is located directly to the right of the dwelling house and consists of a double wooden panel door with eight-pane windows in a shallow porch with stepped segmental arches. To the right of this the single-storey school wing is provided with alternating square nine-pane windows with opening vents and elongated horizontal twenty-seven-pane windows with opening vent in the middle section. The same window arrangement is found in the eastern facade of the school building. In the right-hand side facade of the school wing along the Nic. van Eschstraat nine small high slit windows with opening vent have been placed, which illuminate a space with toilet blocks created by an extension from 1959. On the right corner of this short facade there is still a gate post with a moulded top. Along the northern and eastern side the school playground is enclosed by the two school wings, in which respectively three (eastern wing) and four (northern wing) classrooms are housed: each classroom is provided with a set of three straight-edged windows provided with frames with glazing bars. In the school wing behind the headmaster's house openings to the school playground - on either side of the classrooms - two entrances have been provided, both like the main entrance provided with double wooden panel doors with eight-pane windows. In the school wing situated along the Nic. van Esch on the side of the school playground on the left side a smaller entrance has been provided with a wooden door with a six-pane window.
In the interior the original layout has been completely preserved. Via the main entrance one enters a hall, which is L-shaped along the right and rear side of the headmaster's house. This hall provides access via two arched passages to the corridors along the classrooms. In the interior walls between these corridors and the rooms windows have been placed. The walls below these windows are provided with a black tile band. At the ends of both school wings a space with toilets is housed. On the left in the hall directly behind the main entrance are two doors, which provide access to the headmaster's house. On the street side a narrow garden has been laid out in front of the building, which is enclosed by a low brick wall with iron railing, with brick gate posts with moulded tops between.
Valuation.
The object is of general importance and has cultural-historical value as an example of the typological development of the school building. The building is of architectural-historical importance, as an example of a traditionalist school building and because of the place the building occupies in the oeuvre of the architect H.W. Valk. There is a reasonably high degree of integrity, both in terms of the interior and exterior: the original layout of the building has been preserved and no major alterations have taken place. Finally, the building is of significance from the point of view of rarity; this type has become rare due to demolition.
