Inleiding.

Introduction.

The COUNTRY HOUSE is centrally located in the landscape park. On the rear side of the country house, a terrace with natural stone balustrades forms a connection with the large pond. The central section was erected in 1825. In 1919 the country house was extended with two wings, after which it was taken into use as a hotel-restaurant. The country house is built in circa 1800 style.

Description.

The cellared building consists of a main building with a rectangular ground plan, with two side wings on either side of it. It has two storeys under a flat roof with hipped sections with slate in Dutch bond: above the side wings the roof section is lower than above the main building. On all four sides the roof in the middle is provided with a roof dormer with pilasters and curved pediment, on the rear side two oeil-de-boeufs are also arranged on either side as roof lights. Above the main building are four chimneys with tent-shaped metal chimney caps. The country house has cornice-topped facades erected in brick in English bond with a natural stone cornice and rusticated natural stone corner pilasters. In the front and rear facade of the main building eight-pane sash windows are used in the lower storey, in the upper storey smaller six-pane sash windows. The front facade is composed of three sections. In the projecting facade in the central bay is the main entrance with a balcony above it on natural stone consoles. Main entrance and balcony are accentuated by a slightly projecting natural stone frame, which continues above the cornice in the form of natural stone pilasters and a segmental arched pediment surrounding the aforementioned roof dormer. On either side of the central section are the two side wings which are divided on the front facade into two bays. The bays on either side of the main section are provided in the upper storey with an oval oeil-de-boeuf window with a natural stone ornamental frame with festoons and shell motifs. These bays project in relation to the outermost bays of the side wings, of which only in the rightmost a simple six-pane window with arch moulding is arranged. The right side facade is provided on the ground floor with a three-part composed window with eight-pane sash windows. Above this is a natural stone facade stone in which an oval medallion with the year of reconstruction 1919 is framed by festoons and shell motifs. On the left in this facade a simple straight-shutting door with fanlight is arranged. In the middle of the rear facade a two-part outward-opening door with semicircular fanlight provides access to the large salon. On either side of this are two three-sided bay windows above which balconies with cast-iron balusters are arranged. In the side wings oval oeil-de-boeufs with sandstone festoon frames are arranged in the lower storey and six-pane windows in the upper floor. In the left side facade on the right a side entrance with a straight-shutting two-part door is located. To the left of this at the level of the stairwell a six-pane stained-glass window is arranged, in which two coats of arms are depicted. Directly below this a natural stone decorative stone with festoon is mortared in. In the interior the masonry of the main building consists of Brabant walls. The original layout is still largely maintained. An entrance with barrel vault, which on either side provides access to small office spaces (in the rightmost the hotel reception was formerly located) leads to the large central hall, in which we still find a chimneypiece with decorative tiles and wooden panelling. Above the door to the central hall an oval fanlight is arranged. To the right of the hall is a room that originally served as a dining room. The hall is on the left side in open connection with the stairwell, in which the original wooden balustrade and stained-glass windows are still found. Also in the interior we find among others two original marble chimneypieces and profiled wooden door frames.

Valuation.

The object is of general interest. It possesses cultural-historical value because of the relation of the estate to the former castle Durendael. It also has architectural-historical value as an example of historicizing country house architecture with eclectic detailing. There is a strong visual coherence between the country house and the surrounding landscape park, particularly on the rear side where the terrace and pond show a special visual relation. With regard to the interior, there is considerable integrity: the original layout of the country house is still largely maintained and a number of elements of the original interior have also been preserved.
