The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

Description of component 2:

HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Sparrendaal. Large-scale historical park layout in formal style, partly preserved in structure, partly in detail, laid out in various phases from the last quarter of the 17th century. The formal layout in its present appearance was presumably created shortly after the construction of the current house (1754), making use of the already existing lane structure that belonged to an older farmstead (Laanwijck), which was located somewhat further south. The extensive lane structure is characteristic of the layout. In particular, a vista axis at the rear (main axis) and a cross-axis lined with lime trees at the level of the front courtyard are important sight-determining elements within this structure. The formal front courtyard lies centrally within the layout. Main building and utility buildings are grouped around a circular drive with brick paving and a lawn in the middle. Between outbuildings and main building the front courtyard is bounded by a quarter-circular planting of lime trees. Sight lanes perpendicular to the front and rear of the main building arose from the positioning of the building on an existing path. This main axis as a sight axis at the rear is still partly present. It is closed off on both sides by zones with timber planting of oak and beech and several rows of beeches, the latter presumably dating from the 19th century. On the south-east side of the main axis is an originally complete, now partly surrounded by watercourses, rectangular, former utility garden with a meandering wall, closed off on the south-east side by wall sections of later date. Originally this closable part was bounded on the south-east side by a ditch, now no longer present. On the north-west side the terrain is bounded by a timber bank with beech. Between the timber bank and the buildings lies 19th century deciduous woodland (beech, oak, weeping beech and regeneration).

Valuation:

The HISTORICAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Sparrendaal is of general importance: - Because of the formal lane structure, partly preserved in structure, partly in detail and well-preserved; - Because of the water course system, partly preserved in structure, partly in detail and well-preserved; - Because of the north-western boundary with a timber bank of beeches; - Because of the well-preserved meandering wall; - Because of the well-preserved front courtyard; - Because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
