Inleiding

Introduction

This remarkable country house with garden wall, situated in the inner bend of the Zoutmanlaan, exceptionally well preserved, was designed in 1925 for Jhr. H. VAN PANHUYS by the architect G.L. VAN STRAATEN (*1896), who at that time was based in The Hague. A few years later van Straaten would establish himself in Arnhem. The villa is built in a style showing influences of both the Gooi country house style and the Amsterdam School. The property is surrounded by a partly, notably at the front, well-preserved beautifully laid-out garden with level differences and brick-built seating areas. The planting of this garden consists mainly of evergreen plants such as conifers, coniferous trees and rhododendrons. The villa is situated slightly elevated with respect to the garden sloping towards the rear. The garden is separated from the road by a low curved brick wall with two columns at the entrance on which a wrought iron gate formed by a steel tube. To the right side of the property a small shed annex garage has recently been built, which is not under protection.

Description

The property is built on a butterfly-shaped floor plan which fits well with the bend in the road. The house is constructed in brick, laid in half-bond. The property has two storeys and an attic, with the first floor incorporated into the very large composite and low-hanging overhanging thatched roof. The ridge of the roof is provided with terracotta ridge ornaments. In the middle of the ridge there is a brick chimney. In various roof sections there are low roof dormers around which the thatch is continued. The windows on the ground floor are provided with wooden shutters. The windows are mostly closed by a transom. The drip moulds are executed in brick.

The asymmetrically arranged and bent FRONT FACADE has on the left two windows, of which the left window is narrower and provided with a casement window, and the right one has a renewed window. Next to this, to the left of the bend in the facade, is the entrance section. This has a triangular brick stoop. The handsome round-arched door has a form characteristic of the Amsterdam School and possesses two small panes in front of which wrought iron lettering bears the name of the property "MALIEHOEVE". To the right of the door is a foundation stone. On either side of the door there is a two-sided extension in which narrow vertical light slots are incorporated in which glass bricks are inserted. In the roof section above there are two roof dormers placed one above the other, of which the upper is smaller. The lower roof dormer has a three-part frame with three 9-pane windows; the subsequently located above roof dormer has a two-part frame with two 6-pane windows. The facade section to the right of the entrance, beyond the bend in the facade, has on the left a window with a two-part frame with two casement windows. Below this window are three cellar lights. Above the window is a large cross window breaking through the roof to light the stairwell. The frame has a 9-pane window in each bay. To the right of this is a three-part frame with three single-pane windows. In the overlying roof section there is a roof dormer with a two-part frame and two 9-pane windows. In the lower extension to the right, which was intended as bicycle storage, there is a two-part round-arched door.

Above the LEFT SIDE FACADE the roof curves. The ground floor has on the left a three-sided bay window with a balcony. In the short sides of the bay window there are pivot windows and at the front there are double steel garden doors. The balcony has a wooden balustrade between brick columns. On either side of the balcony door is a 9-pane window.

The symmetrically arranged REAR FACADE has a large semicircular conservatory centrally located in the roof angle with a balcony. The conservatory has double steel garden doors with pivot windows on either side. The upper floor has both on the left and right a door to the balcony with respectively on the left and right a window. In the roof section there is in the roof angle a bent roof dormer with two windows.

In the RIGHT SIDE FACADE on the left is the aforementioned extended bicycle storage which was later enlarged and in which itself in the facade running parallel to the side facade there is an eight-pane window. In the altered short facade between this facade and the facade of the main building mass there are double clamped doors enclosed by a basket arch. According to the building drawings, on this site there was a narrow small window and a two-part straight-closed door. In the facade of the main building mass on the ground floor on the left there is a small two-pane sash window next to which is a window with a three-part frame with three single-pane windows. The upper floor likewise has a three-part frame with three nine-pane windows. In the roof section there is a roof dormer with a two-part frame with two nine-pane windows.

The INTERIOR of the property is fairly well preserved and possesses amongst others an original stairwell and various chimney mantels from the time of construction.

The garden is separated from the road by a low brick WALL with two columns at the entrance, on which wrought iron fencing formed by a steel tube.

Valuation

COUNTRY HOUSE WITH GARDEN WALL

Architectural-historical values:

- This well-preserved villa from the interwar period forms a particularly good example of the Gooi country house style characteristic of that period, in which influences of the Amsterdam School are also clearly recognizable.

- The villa is important because of the well-preserved main form, the detailing and the use of materials as this is expressed, amongst other things, in the very large expressive thatched roof. Of typological importance is the relatively uncommon butterfly-shaped floor plan.

- The villa was designed by the renowned architect G.L. van Straaten and occupies an important place within the oeuvre of this architect.

Urban planning values:

- The villa forms part of the villa development, largely established in the period 1920-1940, in the area between the villa park Overbeek and the Beekhuizenseweg and is image-defining for the Zoutmanlaan because of the striking location in the inner bend of this street.

Cultural-historical values:

- The property is important as a recognizable element from a social development. The property was built as housing for a new and wealthy often urban elite, who preferred to establish themselves in substantial villas in spaciously laid-out romantically designed villa districts. This contributed to the fact that the appearance of the village and the social stratification of its population changed considerably.
