Inleiding

Description
Introduction
This block-shaped two-storey VILLA with COLUMNS along the street was built in 1913/1914 by J.H. JANSEN and forms a good example of the reorientation towards traditional building methods in the early twentieth century in the Netherlands. The building was constructed in the Neo-Historical style, drawing upon the sober Dutch building tradition from the 17th and 18th centuries. The visually distinctive residential building is located at the corner of the Tromplaan and the De Ruyterlaan at the intersection of De Ruyterlaan, Tromplaan, Zoutmanlaan. The building is situated on a slight elevation and has a small surrounding garden. Originally the garden on the south side of the house was larger. Along the street a number of original COLUMNS remain, some with ball-shaped finials. The De Ruyterlaan is a street that opens into the villa park Overbeek and although the street does not appear on the original park design, the buildings in this street are clearly comparable to the buildings in the villa park.
Description
The block-shaped two-storey building has brick façades, laid in stretcher bond. The corners are accentuated by pilasters that end in a stylized capital with a floral motif. The continuous brick plinth is finished at the top with a plastered frieze and a dentil moulding. The hipped roof is covered with laid tuile du nord tiles. On the corners of the flat section there are four whitewashed brick chimneys. The projecting and profiled gutter is supported on corbels. The front and the left side gable each have a roof dormer with volutes and a curved top. The dormers each contain two 9-pane casement windows.
The FRONT FAÇADE has an asymmetrical layout. The main axis is located to the right of centre and contains on the ground floor a double panel door with wrought iron grille, a calf's head with dentil moulding and a 10-pane semicircular fanlight with cathedral glass filling. Above the entrance portal is a semicircular canopy on consoles. The canopy has a profiled moulding. On either side of the front door are plastered corner blocks. Before the entrance are a number of entrance steps with on either side a low wall with a green glazed coping and two corner posts, crowned with a ball-shaped element. Above the entrance is a fixed window with 8-pane fanlight. All window openings of the building have fanlights with purple-tinted cathedral glass fillings and one-and-a-half brick reveals. On either side of the front door on the ground floor is a single-pane sash window with a 10-pane fanlight and shutters for the lower window. The upper storey contains on either side of the centre window a fixed window with an 8-pane fanlight and shutters for the lower window. At the far left in the façade are arranged above each other two oeil de boeufs with plastered surrounds. These oval windows have a 6-pane division.
The LEFT SIDE FAÇADE has on the right a rectangular conservatory with a superimposed and partially embedded in the façade plane balcony and has a wooden balustrade and two supporting columns in the façade plane. The balcony doors have an 8-pane fanlight and shutters. To the left of the conservatory are arranged above each other a single-pane sash window and a fixed window as in the front façade.
The REAR FAÇADE has a non-original single-storey garage extension and a fixed window with shutters as in the front façade. To the left of this a window with three coupled two-pane windows with cathedral glass fanlights and above it an 8-pane fixed window. To the left of the single-storey garage extension a T-window with fanlight.
The RIGHT SIDE FAÇADE also has a single-storey extension with to the left of it on the ground floor a narrow window with a 6-pane fanlight (originally a door) and a window with a 10-pane fanlight and shutters for the lower window. The upper storey has a fixed window with an 8-pane fanlight as in the front façade. To the left of it a small rectangular window. The extension has a door and two windows.
The INTERIOR contains among other things panel doors, stucco ceilings with Art Nouveau ornaments which are presumed to have been supplied by the firm Silberling in Amsterdam as well as terrazzo floors.
Along the street a number of original COLUMNS remain, some with a ball-shaped finial.
